Maxxum Lens

I have a Maxxum 4. I am looking into purchasing and older Maxxum 7000.

My questions are:

Do all Maxxum Lens fit all maxxums? My MAX4 lens will fit MAX7000?

I notice a lot of places list lens as "for Minolta AF", does this

mean the Maxxum cameras also?

Thanks for any help you can give me on this!

Dennis,

All of the Maxxum lens *currently on the market* (see point 2 below) are compatiable for your Maxxum 4 to an old 7000..

However, keep this in mind:

1) For the newer lens which have the "D" designation, such as the 24-105D or 100-300D etc, although they are compatabile, your old 7000 won't be able to use its new D function (Distance function) for the ADI Flashes.. It is not a big concern though unless you want to use ADI flashes.. And vice versa, your Maxxum 4 (ad Maxxum 3,5,7 etc) won't have the ADI function enable for older lens without the D designation .. it will default to TTL.

2) For the "new new" SSM Lens, I don't think any model older than the Maxxum 7 can use them (your Maxxum 4 is 'new'). However, note that the SSM lens are not on the market as of this writing yet although Minolta already announced them in March this year and should be on the market this fall (what I heard)..

Hope it helps.

It's just a guess, but I am sure Minolta will not make such a mistake to make the ssm lenses work only on maxxum/dynax7 or newer. They certainly will work <i>in the traditional autofocus way</i> on any older af camera.

<br>As to the ADI metered flash, I personally never ever met anybody who made real use of the feature. Have you?

<p>These are just details, it should not scare somebody who just enters the minolta af system.

<br>cheers!

csab' józsa ,

According to Minolta USA's website at:

http://www.minoltausa.com/eprise/main/MinoltaUSA/MUSAContent/CPG/CPG_News/CPG_NewsDetail/New_Lenses_and_Teleconverters?header=aboutus

The Spec Sheet for the new SSM 70-200mm and 300mm lens quote :

"Compatible bodies

Autofocus can be used with the Maxxum 7 or later models.

Autofocus cannot be used with models introduced before the Maxxum 7; the Maxxum 9 can be updated to be fully compatible with the SSM lenses."

What I *guess* is that, for these new SSM lens, MF can be used with any AF (Maxxum/Dynax) bodies (including the old Minolta 7000, since their Mount is the same) but AF can only be used with Maxxum 7 bodies or later..

As for the ADI, it is very accurate. However, I should point out that the TTL for my Maxxum 7 also performs very well when I bounce my flash or with any add-on filters.

And I also agress that no one should be scared away from the wonderful lines of Minolta AF Lens (for Maxxum/Dynax)! And I heard their G series of lens are Excellent.

The Xi's (I think) had a power zoom feature and may be camera specific, but autofocus works all up/down the Maxxum the line. Minolta AF is Maxxum. I wouldn't worry about the SSMs, even if they didn't autofocus (which seems really unlikely) on the 4? Just stick with all of the other available Minolta and 3rd party lenses.

though I assume a Maxxum 4 and a Maxxum 7000 user (while excellent cameras -- I

use a 7000 in addition to my 7) probably isn't going to be purchasing even the 70-

200mm SSM : )

Yes, as stated above, every autofocus (AF) (Maxxum) lens made by Minolta will work

on both your Maxxum 4 and 7000. Lenses marked MD or MF will -not- fit. It must be

marked Auto Focus, AF, or Maxxum (or be designated to fit any one of those three

categories, in the case of a 3rd party manufacturer.)
