Rules and regs of this forum

Hello, being a member for nearly 10 years now. I dont want to just break rules when posting here. I know that P.net doesn't allow posting pictures that are not your own. Well last year I acquired a box of wet plates, developed and all, they start to slowly break down as the original owner didn't keep them in good conditions. Now that my basement darkroom is up and running after months of remodeling, I would like to know if I posted scans from these plates, would P.net moderator allow it?

Your right to publish the plates depends on whether they are under copyright.

"In the United States, all books and other works published before 1923 have expired copyrights and are in the public domain. In addition,

works published before 1964 that did not have their copyrights renewed 28 years after first publication year also are in the public domain.

Hirtle points out that the great majority of these works (including 93% of the books) were not renewed after 28 years and are in the public

domain." Wikipedia

Personally, I would think the degree of certainty that the plates are in the public domain can be assumed to be 100%.

Do not post photos which you have not taken yourself. That is simple and clear. Photo.net does not have the time or resources to check whether a photo is copyrighted or out of copyright or public domain or permission has been granted by the copyright owner to use it or whether it would fall under fair use or anything else. Most moderators are fairly easy going and will let something slip by if it is obviously something on which copyright no longer would apply but don't count on it happening all the time. It is better to upload the photo to the web and provide a link to the photo.
