Good Morning,
It's time to bring a close to the year. You've shown us wonders from nature from around the world. Some have been familiar and some new. All have been enjoyable. Hopefully the new year will bring many more. With the last light of day gone, evening greets a birch tree. Let's send out 2016 with great images on this Monday in Nature.

00eI6v-567049584.thumb.JPG.9d439a0490a902db95439ff6f0dce494.JPG

We were out for an Xmas walk on the lake at 3pm yesterday. It had been +2C on Xmas eve but the temp had fallen to -13C by the time of our walk. It is supposed to be +4C today. The freezing rain has already started.
It was nice to see the sun (it was shy in December), and it gave us a bit of a show when I shot into it. It really highlighted the textures in the ice and snow, and interacted nicely with the lens on the little Sony.

I hope all choosing to celebrate at this time of year are having as much fun as I am! Our two daughters have found their way home making this the first Christmas in three years we've all been under one roof. Usually at least one of them is off tramping the globe somewhere. The house has been more like 'home' again, music playing, cookies baking, turkey roasting, glasses clinking and lots of hugging. Their Mum is in her element.
The weather has turned warmer today and we are undergoing a huge melt but it is still very white out there.
I don't shoot the deer as often any more as they are just so prevalent here but this one stole my heart. He was born on the property to parents who were likely born on the property and although naturally timid these animals are much more trusting no harm will come to them here. Consequently, they can usually be seen out of one window or the other all year long. My dog, Elwood, was trained at a very early age that the deer are not to be bothered, so he can usually be found perched on the front porch watching over everyone, tolerating all but the squirrels, chipmunks, bears and foxes. It's a cool scene. Christmas morning there were four large deer browsing our sumacs, inches from the dining room windows. You could almost imagine sleigh tracks in the snow...
Gordon, that image is wonderful! Was it taken near your home or on vacation somewhere?
Laura, thanks for keeping this thread thriving. It is by far my favourite stop here at P.net these days and I appreciate your devotion to it.
Merry Christmas and happy holidays to all with wishes for a great coming year!

Thanks for the kind words.

Gup the photo was taken in the woods behind my house. I was on the ground photographing the mushroom when this very small toad hopped by. I borrowed it for a moment for the portrait before it went on its way.

I would also like to thank Laura for her devotion to keeping this thread alive. Contributing to the weekly thread and viewing all of the great photos are my motivation for returning to PN each week.

The weather has been cold here on Southern Vancouver Island. Some snow and below freezing when the nights are clear. I'm having to bring the hummingbird feeder inside overnight to keep it from freezing solid. Before dawn the alarm goes off on the iPad and I get up to put it back outside. Only then do I turn up the heat and make coffee.

00eI9V-567059584.jpg.f9834f7142dd8dd6ebbcf4bd4e4121b8.jpg
