Canon FDn 28-85/4.0 Zoom Macro

<p>Any actual first hand IQ knowledge & experience with this lens would be appreciated.</p>

<p>I have only used my example a few times and I like it. Mark Wahster has used it a lot more and you can search for his posts in this forum. </p>

<p>My brother has one and I borrowed it for a while. Highly dislike. Zoom and focus rings were way too loose for me. But it could have been just that lens.</p>

<p>To be honest though, in general I dislike zooms.</p>

<p>I have had one for about twenty years and the optical quality is very good but the build quality isn't it's rather plasticy, however this needs to be weighed against the fact that it's an extremely useful swiss army knife of a lens that's ideal as a walk around lens.</p>

<p>Since it was one of the last FD zooms made, its build quality is poor, but optically it's up there with the 35-105, 20-35 L, and 80-200 L.</p>

<p>Appreciate all the feedback...consensus seems very positive about its IQ which is always a make or break issue.<br />I had barely gotten a used one unwrapped when a used 35-105 also arrived and it quickly became a favorite, leaving the 28-85 sitting in storage.<br /><br />Agree the 28-85 zoom range is a good one and I've decided to try dedicating it as the main FD lens on a body I had converted for Infrared shots...so was curious what a number of other users thought about it's IQ.<br />Not sure about the 'build quality' comments but at my age it'll probably outlast me, LOL</p>

<p>It was my favourite FD zoom during my film photography days from '96-2005 (I could never see the point of AF as a young man...). Unfortunately my first copy suffered a drop and as a consequence snapped at the lens mount - my current copy also has an incredibly bad zoom mechanism which makes it hard to use unless kept dead level. So yeah, the build is an issue!<br>

I do, however, think it's a very good lens optically. In that respect, I tested a the FD 28-85/4 against my Contax 28-85 and, while leagues apart in build quality, there was very little to choose between them sharpness-wise on the Sony A7r. The Contax was marginally better at the long end, the Canon was arguably stronger at the wide end.</p>
