mervyn_wilmington
I use my XT1 with a Nissin i40. I often use bounce flash. It works very well, but sometimes can be a bit short of power and has longer recharge times.

I was considering using another, remote, flash gun with a slave unit - I already have a slave unit. However, might it be the case that using the Nissin set to ttl, and perhaps other settings, that pre-flash would set-off the remote too early? Also any views on a 'cheap' gun for the slave?

Advice would be appreciated.
steve_solomon2
Hi Mervyn.
I had the exact same issue, until Iswitched batteries to VARTA High Energy AA's. Probelm solved! (I'm no electrical engineer, but I think the issue is that generic AA's don't have enough power to recycle the flash properly.) Good luck sir!
mervyn_wilmington
Thanks for that Steve. I always use top quality batteries. However, while I can see that such - including Vartas , which I have used in other sizes - might improve recharge speed, do they improve the actual flash output? I would have thought not, but someone may correct me.
steve_solomon2
You're quite welcome sir. As for improving flash output, I haven't measured that, but my hunch is you're correct. I only noticed that the VARTA's resolved the issue where the flash occassionally partially exposed the frame. Once the flash is permitted to fully recharge though, I would think that any AA brand would work, i.e., provide the same power output (assuming no problems with the flash unit itself).
mukul_dube
Many cameras and flash-guns can have the pre-flash disabled. Some slave units can also be set to ignore the pre-flash. The manuals for the XT1 and the Nissin should show you the way. For combining the outputs of two flash-guns you might try manual mode rather than TTL.
