jonathan_hamilton
Many thanks indeed all - really appreciate your responses!
Take your point - auto exposure is bad - presume that auto exposure and auto ISO are 1 and the same thing.
Just to clarify (again, please excuse my ignorance) - is there a difference between auto exposure and TTL metering?
Also - just to follow-up on my questions above:
- Can anyone recommend a good remote flashgun arrangement that is ultra simple to use and appropriate for our setup please?
- Can anyone reccommend a really simple tabletop tripod other than the Gorillapod range please?
Many thanks again!

Best regards,

Jonathan
William Michael

"presume that auto exposure and auto ISO are 1 and the same thing."

No. Not exactly. (see combined explanation below)

*

"is there a difference between auto exposure and TTL metering?"

Yes. But the two have a relationship.

Exposure is controlled by changing any one, or a combination of any of the three EXPOSURE PARAMETERS.
The three EXPOSURE PARAMETERS are: APERTURE; SHUTTER SPEED: SENSITIVITY (aka "ISO").

The TTL Meter will control the exposure (i.e. will change one or more exposure parameters automatically):
1. when the camera is set to any of the AUTOMATIC CAMERA MODES
or
2. when the camera is set to any of the SEMI-AUTOMATIC CAMERA MODES
or
3. when the camera is set to "Auto ISO"

Examples of Automatic Modes are: "Full Auto" "Sports" "Portrait" "Scene" etc
Examples of Semi-automatic Camera Modes are: Aperture Priority; Shutter Priority; Program

The only Camera Mode(s) where the TTL Meter does not control the exposure are:
a. Manual Mode
b. Time Mode
c. Bulb Mode

However some, but not all, cameras will allow "Auto ISO" to be engaged when the camera is in Manual Mode.
If this is the situation then the TTL Meter will still control the exposure even when that camera is in Manual Mode.
This could be relevant to the Nikon coolpix - I don't know for sure.

I am not sure if any camera which has Time and or Bulb Modes available, will allow Auto ISO to be engaged when either of those camera modes are set.

WW
