Wifi digital camera able to automatically upload to the cloud?

Recommended Posts

Hi, just wondering if there are any digital cameras out there that are able to automatically upload my pics (using built-in wifi) directly to the cloud (instead of saving them locally)?

I would like my photos to never be stored on the local device but each time a pic is taken, it gets uploaded immediately to a cloud storage application. These are pics I am taking for work. I don't need to have constant access to them but I may need to go back and check one every once in a while. Therefore I would just wish to find and download that one pic when the situation arises.

I would prefer to avoid the issue of the hardware being "full" or "out of available memory" so again, straight to the cloud with no local storage would be my first choice. If this doesn't exist I would like to find the closest thing possible (as automated as possible).

The pic quality needs to be pretty high so that I can see some details in the picture.

Thanks so much!

Shane

I doubt you'll ever see a wifi camera that doesn't at least store photos locally at first, mostly for practical reasons. It still would make sense to have something like an Eye-Fi designed for a security or similar environment where it only kept images a limited time or number. Now ensuring the files transferred correctly seems unfortunately to be missing from most file transfer systems. Rsync could do it, but a custom protocol that sent back a checksum after transfer would work just as well.

In the end please report who gave the best answers, pnet or https://www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/4058228 :-)

I think you may run into trouble with bandwith with your internet provider. It's easy to fill a 4 of 8 GB card, which is about the data limit with lots of subscriptions. So you'll need one of the pricier agreements. And it takes time to upload pictures, so you'll need internal memory or storate cards to store the pictures temporarily.

Sony has an in-camera application called "PlayMemories Online", which can be set up to automatically sync images in the camera with iCloud storage. It is a subscription service, but the cost is reasonable.

Some of the caveats to observe..

You are limited to 5 GB of storage, which means temporary storage and/or reduced image size.

iCloud won't replace memory cards. It takes a long time to upload images, best done in background (unless you don't mind waiting between shots).

This application is best used for sharing images on social media.

Memory cards are (relatively) cheap, fast, and generally safe. WiFi is slow and subject to interference and poor connections.

Look at your own WiFi service and estimate how long it would take to upload the contents of a 32 to 64 GB memory card. (Mine would take up to 35 hours). In contrast, it takes about 10 minutes to upload a 64 GB card to a laptop.

So, with no local storage, you simply would not be able to take pictures if you did not have a Wi-Fi connection. What about landscape photos in places like National Parks where there is seldom Wi-Fi away from the lodge? Or pictures of the kids down at the lake, good Wi-Fi there?
Think about the practicality of such a camera.

IDK the current US$ rates but believe I did not even pay 20 Euro for my 32GB Sandisk SDs. - 256GB SDs exist and can be had for about 100Euro by Kingston & Lexar, 120 Euro for the cheapest Sandisk. - Modern cameras have 2 slots so it might take you a while (or even forever?) to fill one with JPGs.
I noticed a lot of modern cameras get charged via USB cables that could also download pictures on the charging PC or the Dropbox / CC account it is connected to. -I am not overly tech savvy, but think I stumbled across a "download & delete" setting in some software - maybe Picasa? -The combined recharging & downloading would probably mean clicking "OK" 3 times in a worst case.
Assuming I'd fancy to use my domestic Internet connection to store everything to the cloud: A single RAW file of 35MB would take about 12 minutes to upload. - Considering an 8 frames buffer, I'd have to wait 1.5h till I could switch the camera off, not mentioning an probably immense battery drain if the uploading would keep the camera out of sleep mode. + I'd also be pretty blocked from shooting people at my usual pace.
We can guess & argue back and forth. - A company you are working for is likely to have faster Internet than me at 1st glimpse but that is usually pretty basic divided through all its users. You also might be happy storing JPGs to the cloud and have smaller files that way.
I'd use any kind of crummy netbook or comparable minimalistic PC to recharge a modern camera and forward images from it.
I wouldn't bother about the cloud, unless I am planning to survive the explosion of a nuclear power plant I am working at and use cloud stored images to proof that somebody else should take a way bigger share of the blame for that accident.
If the camera shall be powered by an AC adapter, why not wire it into a given LAN? Maybe even shoot tethered?
If we are talking about a sneaky project at work: I'd guess the sysops will notice your camera generated traffic and ask questions.
If you meant cell phone networks instead of WLAN: No clue, they look entirely overpriced and practically pretty useless to me. - Looking for infinite contracts and their pricing I can't spot a better deal than 7 Euro for 3GB bandwidth per month. Buying storage is cheaper.
