mark_stephan2
A few years ago I was given the Elan IIe and 7e and 420EX and 300TL speedlites. Do either of these bodies support the old A-TTL technology or does it require newer eTTL speedlites? I've tried both with my 40D and get consistently over exposed digital pictures so I'm guessing they aren't compatible but I could be wrong.
peter_langfelder
I am not the most knowledgeable, but AFAIK the 420EX should be compatible with both the Elans and the 40D. The 300TL is definitely not compatible with the 40D. If the 420 is consistently overexposing, its circuit board may be bad.
JosvanEekelen
Elan IIe (EOS 50) and 7e are e-TTL bodies, should work with 420EX without a problem. 300TL is different in so far that it pre-dates the EOS series. It might work with these bodies, either in A-TTL, or they might revert to plain TTL. As always check out http://photonotes.org/articles/eos-flash/ for more info.
420EX should work with the 40D as well, I doubt that you will good results with the 40D/300TL combo. This stuff is quite old, things may be broken.
Ken Katz
According to the "photonotes" link provided by Jos, the 300TL should provide basic TTL flash metering functions on EOS film bodies, but it will only work in manual on any digital body. Any EX flash should work with any EOS film or digital body, so if the 420EX is not working properly, perhaps there is an specific issue with that unit. Make sure the 420EX is set on ETTL mode, all the contacts are clean, and its firmly seated in the flash shoe.
