Canon 5D Mark IV and Third Party Lenses - Minor Bumps

I have come across two minor bumps with the new Canon 5D Mark IV and my two third party lenses. I am passing the info along in case anyone runs into this.
My SIGMA 50mm F/1.4 DG HSM EX when used with the new Canon 5D MK IV with firmware V1.01 produced a JPEG in camera processing with light shaded circles on the image. This is not seen in the RAW. The easy solution is to turn off Peripheral Illumination in the camera settings when using this lens. Problem solved. See image below.

The next problem I ran into is My Canon 5D MK IV Live View shuts off immediately after being pressed when using my Tamron SP 70-200 F/2.8 Di Lens produced before May 11th of 2015,. This problem has not happened in video mode, but I have read that touch screen focusing does not work with this lens.

The Tamron lens seems to work great in normal shooting mode, fast focus and great images.

After some research I found Tamron has several lenses produced before May 11th of 2015 that will need to have their firmware upgraded to fix these issues.

Link to Tamron site with info on this issue.
I contacted my local camera store, they were unable to update the firmware in the store but will send the lens to Tamron to do the firmware update. They said Tamron has a fast turnaround and it should be about 5 days.

I have also read that Canon is working on a Firmware update that will address third party lens compatibility issues.

These are minor bumps and has their workarounds. I am still very pleased with the camera so far and no regrets. These issues are not a deal breaker for me. I really like this camera.

Cheers, Mark

Good update, Mark. I'm not shocked by the first issue with peripheral illumination, I'm assuming the camera doesn't have a profile for that lens.
I'm actually kinda curious if anybody has experienced any issues with the Tamron 150-600 yet.

My Tamron 150-600 (manufactured before May 11, 2015) works just fine when shooting raw on the 5D4; I've not tried jpegs. Tamron recommends disabling the peripheral illumination, but I suppose that in camera correction would only be applied to jpegs.

You may see it if shooting raw plus jpeg, but the raw will not have the issue. The RAW file can't have this issue as the issue only happens because the camera is applying lens correction to the jpeg only. The RAW file has no settings applied to it. RAW files are just that, RAW. Nothing gets done to RAW, no noise correction, no color style, no sharpness, no contrast, no perephrial illumination. RAW files will only be corrected in post on your computer if you so choose.

The Sigma can probably have the firmware update using a Sigma USB adapter or at a good local camera shop. The Tamron would need sent to Tamron. Turning off perephral illumination should make the issue go away. I don't know why you are still having the issue, but my guess is you are looking at jpeg, not raw.

Thank you so much Mark for your reply, but I ONLY shoot in RAW and I am seeing it. I would be more than happy to send you a RAW file to show you. The Sigma firmware was just updated two months ago - still shows it and Tamron says my lens has the latest firmware updated. This is such a frustrating issue, but I definitely see it shooting RAW. I can use the 5Diii and I don't see it.

Guess you will need to put a link to download it. A RAW won't make it through my email.

Are you sure you are not seeing a jpeg thumbnail embedded in the RAW?

I am puzzled how a RAW file would have this problem otherwise.

I had to send my Tamron 24-70 F2.8 VC and Tamron 70-300 F4-5.6 VC in for the firmware update and now they both work fine in all situations. However, I own the 17-40 F4L, 85 1.2L, 50 1.8, and 28 1.8. My favorite lens by far is the 70-200 F2.8 IS II. This lens on the 5DIV blows everything else away in ever aspect. I am tempted to upgrade my Tamron 24-70 VC to the Canon 24-70 F2.8L II, but I shoot a lot of video and really enjoy having the VC on the Tamron for hand holding video.

Good to know. You are talking about the Canon MK II Lens, right. I wanted one but got the Tamron because at the time it was about $700 less than the Canon. The Tamron is a good sharp lens though. I am fairly evenly divided in the number of my Canon lenses and third party.

Lenses I own/owned and used with the 5D MK IV:

 • Canon 24mm f/2.8 L Tilt-Shift Obviously no issue with 5D MK IV
 • Canon 40mm f/2.8 Obviously no issue with 5D MK IV
 • Canon 17-40mm f/4 L Obviously no issue with 5D MK IV
 • Canon 14mm f/2.8 L Obviously no issue with 5D MK IV
 • Canon 24-70mm f/2.8 L MK I Obviously no issue with 5D MK IV
 • Canon 100-400 L Original sold it. Obviously no issue with 5D MK IV
 • Canon 24-135mm Macro Sold it Obviously no issue with 5D MK IV
 • Tamron 70-200mm f/2.8 No issues with 5D MK IV after firmware update
 • Sigma 50mm f/1.4 Old version of lens has issue with 5D MK IV, I will have to pick up a USB dock to upgrade the firmware
 • Sigma 85mm f/1.4 Art No issues with 5D MK IV
 • Sigma 150-600mm C No issues with 5D MK IV
 • Sigma 1.4 Teleconverter No issues with 5D MK IV works with Sigma 150-600, Canon 100-400, Canon 24mm Tilt-shift.

The Sigma USB dock should let you do your own Sigma lens firmware updates. I will pick one up eventually. No such dock available from Tamron though Tamron gives a 6-year warranty as long as you kept your receipt.

I pretty much stopped shooting JPG and only shoot RAW, personal choice. So peripheral illumination is not relevant in RAW.
