m42 adaptor for Sony Alpha/NEX

Recommended Posts

Soon I'm likely to borrow one of these cameras (maybe a 6000) - and I'd like to use it with a Meyer-Optik 50mm Domiplan. I can see loads of 3rd party adaptors for this with a range of features, including helical focusing and even tilt. I thought all I needed was to be able to get infinity focus - but maybe these features are useful. Can anyone comment on these? Are any of these adaptors poor and to be avoided?

thanks!

After switching to the Sony system I bought a Trioplan, hence I also bought a simple M42/NEX adapter on eBay. Fine. I later bought a helicoid adapter for the Nikon mount (to use a few Nikon legacy lenses I have) and recently a tilt adapter (tilt only, much cheaper than tilt&shift), because I want to experiment. I must say that the mechanical quality of the latter two adapters is absolutely fine, everything locks in the proper way. I don't have the tools to measure whether alignment is preserved... but it's not a big deal with macro, and it's not an issue with the tilt adapter. A couple of weeks ago I ordered another tilt adapter, for the m42 mount, to further experiment with other legacy lenses I'd like to buy.
So, my comment is that there are very good adapters on the market with extended features, such as helicoid and tilt. The problem is: mine are brandless, bought on eBay, so I can't recommend a specific brand/model. My suggestion is the obvious one: if you want to try them, choose a vendor with a good reputation and a liberal return policy.

I haven't tried any of the specialty adapters so far. One of the things I encountered for my M42 glass though was that the first adapter I bought wasn't usable with all my M42 lenses. The first adapter I bought just had M42 threads on one end. I have a couple of M42 lenses that do not have the A-M switch, so I was not able to stop those lenses down. I then found another type of NEX-M42 adapter that has a shelf, or flange, if you will, at the base of the M42 threads -- one that comes into contact with the aperture pin. This solved the issue with those lenses. So, this is something you might want or need to consider if you have any M42 lenses that do not have the A-M switch.
