Epson 3880 print count- also Maintenance Cartridge.

Recommended Posts

Anyone know how the Epson 3880 counts prints or images? My 3880 indicates 252 pages. The number of prints I have made is closer to 25. No, it is not a refurbished model. Bought new from B&H.
Maintenance cartridge indicated at 8 percent. Display says to replace SOON. But Printer will not print.

Ron I have an Epson 3880 but cannot answer your question directly. To be honest I did not realise that so much data was available via the built-in display, but on looking I find that my print count is on 11063 and maintenance cartridge on 64% (I presume this means 64% used, 36% capacity left). IIRC I have changed the cartridge just once. I have found my 3880 works OK even after weeks of inactivity, your print count of 252 (over what period?) does however indicate a very low level of use - maybe a lot of cleaning cycles?. One thing with the 3880 is the high ink consumption when changing between matte and photo black. To guard against drying up, I do use my 3880 for text printing (10 to 20 A4 pages a day) when I am not doing many pictures. When you say the printer will not print, does it react in any way when you try to make a print? If you have not done so, I would recommend installing Epson Status Monitor (free download from Epson website) which would at least reveal whether your computer is communicating with the printer and may generate an error message which would give you a clue where the trouble is.

Ron, unless you had been running a lot of cleaning cycles you shouldn't be seeing the "Replace soon" message.

In anycase if the printer is not printing, I think you have a serious problem. Can your run the standard test print to it?

David, I find that if I run the test page option once or twice it clears any slight clogs. That is, if there are slight clogs the

first time I run the test page there may be a couple of gaps between lines in each ink block print out but after one/two

more time(s) all the dots join up.

I do this every couple of weeks if I know I won't print for some time.

Thanks much for your responses. I have a 2880 and a newer 3880. I have printed about 25 color prints of various sizes on the 3880. I keep the cleaning cycles to a minimum and have not experienced any need to clean the 3880 but did inadvertently do so until I learned to keep my hands off the menu button on the printer. The reason why the printer would not print was that I needed to change the maintenance cartridge. I thought SOON was not meant to be right this minute but it was. I ordered a couple of cartridges from B&H, installed one and the printer worked fine except-
I am having a problem with a magenta color cast that is driving me crazy. All was great until Installed Windows 10 and the color changed- on both the 2880 and the 3880. I have installed the latest drivers for CS5, the printer and re-calibrated the monitor all to no avail. The color looks great on the screen but on the preview it is a hideous red. I have loaded a great many icc profiles and use them religiously but still the color cast. I let Photoshop manage the color with the installed profile. Still no luck. Any ideas?

I think that one or more cartridges are clogged.

You can easily find out if you run the Test print. I can't comment on Windows but on the Mac it's done through the System Preferences -> Printers,...

Are you getting all the dots in ALL the ink cartridges to join up?

If not then that is where your problem is. If all the dots join up then I don't have any other suggestions, yet.

InkSupply.com sells chip resetters for Epson cartridges. https://www.inksupply.com/chipreset.cfm
The SK168 is for Epson desktop printers and the SK188 is for wide format printers. I have used the SK188 to reset the chips and maintenance tank on an Epson 4800 Pro. I do not know if it will work on the 3880 or not as it is not listed. The amount of ink in a maintenance tank cannot be determined without taking the top grade out then carefully removing the padding to see how saturated it is. I gave the 4800 to the ewaste recyclers as it was not worth repairing.

I have run test prints and the nozzles are OK. The new maintenance cartridge is working well. When I put the image on the screen using CS5 it appears fine. When I view the image in Preview the red cast tgakes over the image.
I will post photos in a new forum question.

Charles, Ron,
The 4800 resetter does NOT work on the 3800/3880 maint. carts. There's a different resetter for those (also from inksupply or others --check ebay for prices. Caveat, on the 3800/3880 you need to have at least one extra -new or resetted- cartridge to flush the internal memory of the printer. Otherwise, even if the cartridge is reset, the machine will recognize it and won't budge from the percentage it remembers.
