McKeown's Camera Encyclopedia & Price Guide

Recommended Posts

Maybe someone on this forum will buy a copy and look-up stuff for us? Otherwise, I think I'll need to wait about 20 years for an affordable copy to find its way on to eBay.
Having said that, I've never seen inside a McKeown's, and it might be a bit of a holly grail (as in the not very impressive cup - if you believe that Indiana Jones movie).

The guide is invaluable as a resource for manufacturers and models. As a price guide, its relationship to reality has been iffy for some time. The edition I have has a quote on the back cover, something like "the price of a camera depends entirely on the mood of the buyer and the seller at the time of sale" or words to that effect.l I'm very glad there's a new edition!

An old story I've told many times about my experience/lack of with price guides. Some years ago, I used to go to the shows (remember those). I had been to a flea market one weekend, and bought a Camera Light. The Zippo lighter, with a camera inside. Mine was complete, camera, tiny cassettes, original box, even a couple pictures taken with it. I paid the princely sum of ONE DOLLAR. I thought I might have gotten a good deal, but wasn't into miniatures, so I decided to take it with me to trade at the next show. Well, as I made my way around the show, I showed the item a few times, with little interest being shown. Finally, I got to a table where one of the dealers offered to trade it for a K1000. I was happier than a pig in stuff, and went away with a smile. Six months pass, and I'm at the next show. There's a booth selling the guide, and what do I see. I swear, it is my Camera Light on the cover. I bought the book, to find it had a value between $600-$800. I wasn't quite as happy that day, but I learned my lesson. I bought every issue of the guide after that, and will purchase this one also.

Price guides are useless because it all comes down to location, things that are easy to find in the US for instance are a pain to find here in Europe and vice versa. And even then it all comes down on popularity, you can quote a certain piece at 1000$ but if nobody is interested in it then there you are with your 1000$ pricetag.

I looked up MeKeown on Amazon, and the prices are astronomical. I have one of his books, ca 2000, purchased at a

reasonable price and it is a wealth of information.

I believe McKeown often posts here and I value his insights,
