Dual Flash setup on Kirks dual flash bracket

I have a Nikon SB-25 and I just purchased the Nikon SB-26 flash units along with Mike Kirks dual flash holder brackett. I have the SC-17 and SC-19 cords and a Quantum turbo flash. I would like to here from anyone who has experience with these hand held setups on how to best setup the camera (Nikon F-90x (N90x) or F4E) and the dual flashes for best exposure on macro work and closeups such as on butterflies and insects. I hope I don't have too much power here for these closeups which may be as close as 5" away. I have a 200mm micro non AF, a 105 AF micro and Nikons extension tubes and a 4t diopter. Since I have no experience with this yet any info to get started would be appreciated. I will thank you now for your input.

You need to run some tests. Presumably you'll set the camera in 'auto-everything' mode (matrix balanced fill flash) in order to be able to work quickly. I would start there and first experiment with putting the flashes in different relative positions, starting with one light up and to one side (like a sun) and the other in a place that can cut the shadows from the first one, at some fraction of the main light's output depending on your tastes. There is a procedure for running these tests outlined in one of Moose Peterson's books, but it's not hard to invent your own, as long as it's systematic and you take good notes about what you did so you can replicate it once you look at each frame you get back. You can even place little cards with the settings into the test frames.

(By the way, it strikes me that two large speedlights on a bracket with a mass of cords and a Quantum battery all attached to an F4E must weigh a ton, which may hamper your mobility greatly, I'm afraid...I tend to stick with one small SB23 and hope it's not too harsh a shadow.)
