"It Follows"... most convincing film color shot digitally.

Recommended Posts

Saw the movie last night on Sony 4K projection at my local cineplex. It's a beautifully shot movie whose color and non-HD somewhat soft look had me convinced it was shot on film that I waited to the end of the credits to find no "Kodak" or "Fuji" film logo or any word similar to "internegative". Imdb states it was shot on Arri Alexa digital equipment.

Really good interview of the cinematographer indicating the inspiration for the look of the film...

If you're a film photographer or any photographer I'ld urge you to check out this movie just to see how well they recreated the film color palette of the late '70's & early '80's John Carpenter styled slasher film flicks. I actually was more creeped out by the surreal flash back I felt by its very convincing recreation of that era and middle class lifestyle over the actual plot which actually toys with you on a whole other psychological level.

For me it was a very dreamlike/nightmarish experience similar to "The Ring" due to how well it portrays so effectively, creepily a time and place. IOW there's something more about this movie on a nostalgic level for anyone who forgot how "shlocky" the '80's really were for suburban subdivision dwellers in which I spent my late teens & entire 20's.

Throughout the movie I was spotting different film stock emulations that weren't overdone like most you see in online still photographs. I was actually saying..."There's Ektachrome...there's Provia". For example there's a scene where the camera follows behind a male actor heading out of the shade and toward the beach with the sun in his face fluorescing through his dark hair creating an intense fuchsia/magenta sheen. The color was just beautiful. Here's some examples of what I could find online which I feel isn't enough to describe what I saw...

While I wouldn't notice anything you speak of (not having enough experience with film), thanks for the heads-up about the movie. Looks like one I'd enjoy, and I've never heard of it. Will have to catch on-demand late-night when the wife's in bed though. Horror isn't her favorite genre.
