Canon F-1s

Recommended Posts

No one can tell you as Canon has never released any sales figures on the FD line of cameras. There have been a couple guys who had conducted Serial number surveys over the years to try to get close. Not sure how to get ahold of any of them currently.

I'm one of the guys who recorded F-1 serial numbers and date codes year's back.

1976 Olympic F-1 serial numbers ran from about 295XXX to 306XXX, so less than 9,000 were built. Canon made "ordinary" F-1s' in this block of serial numbers too, so it's probably impossible to get a 100% accurate number as to how many were built.

For the 1980 Olympic F-1n, serial numbers ran from about 604XXX to 617XXX. Ordinary F-1's are also found in this block of serial numbers.

For the LA F-1N, serial numbers ran from 0001 to about 9400. This block of serial numbers is dedicated to the LA camera so about 9,500 were probably built.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Rick.

The F-1 (especially the original) has always been my favorite 35mm SLR. I was always curious as to how many Canon made so started a database of serial numbers and date codes about 15 years back. Most of the numbers came from cameras on eBay. I recorded info for several years before stopping. Recently, I gave all of my F-1 serial number info to a fellow Canon collector who merged my info with his. He now has an incredibly detailed F-1 serial number database.

I've also have recorded serial numbers and date codes for other Canon SLR cameras (FT, etc.) but my F-1 database is by far the most detailed. I hope folks found the above info helpful.

Jim, I had the opportunity very recently to see a literally new in box and untouched "50 Jahre" Leicaflex SL2 in black finish. Breathtaking

as a time capsule like that can be, compared to the beautiful F-1n I carried that day the SL2 seemed rather quaint and

dated, an imperious anachronism.

I'm so "grumpy " Jim because it upsets me to think that there are so many people who are gear freaks and so obsessed with such trivialities. Photography is about pictures not the equipment.
I was a professional photographer for around thirty years and never once heard any of my fellow photographers ever say they wondered how many of their cameras were made, probably because they considered them tools to make their living with like hammers and saws to a carpenter not devotional objects to worship.

Ben, you’re missing the point. You had nothing salient to add to the question Paulo asked about how many Olympic F-1’s were made and, for some reason, felt compelled to launch an attack on him and anybody else who doesn’t agree with your narrow view of photography. In the future, if a thread doesn’t interest you, why don’t you just ignore it.

Hello everyone,
To Jim database, my Canon F-1n S/n is 176217. It came with AE Motor Drive and Battery Pack FN (S/n 141353). I don't know where to find the second part of the serial number like the ones Paulo get (P839, S809,... )
