john_boyd9
I will finish my undergrad in photography next year (i'm in Toronto). I want to do my masters but I'm not sure if I should do it in CA or NY. CA has lower cost of living and has a nice weather and since I'm a big fan of landscape photography CA has more to offer in that regards. My sister lives in NY, and I have a cousin in CA so I have someone to help me out when i first move to either one of these cities.
Now the big question is which one has the best masters program?
SCL
You didn't mention which schools you are talking about, which I think is a bigger deal than what city they are located in, or what you plan to do with your masters degree....teach, open a business, go into cinematography, photojournalism, etc. Also, I think the potential for developing and cultivating professional contacts during school should enter your decision making process, and should be investigated before making a decision. Are the alumni active in promoting the professional careers of the graduates, and what does the school itself do to foster graduates securing positions in their chosen field of endeavor?

We have landscapes for every season and each landscape in its season has something to offer. NY is huge. Don't get locked into just the island of Manhattan and think you've seen it all. Other than that, what Stephen said.

john_boyd9
Yes I have been to Manhattan and New Jersey. My sister lives in New Jersey. But I never got a chance to go on adventures around the city. What I'm thinking of doing after i graduate is to open up a business. I have had few exhibitions here in Toronto so going into that direction and producing that kind of art work is another interest of mine.
What are the best schools both in NY and CA?
danielheller
I would tend to think that getting into the school that has the best and most recognized program overrides all other decisions about picking one of the two places mentioned.
john tonai
I would hope that you would want to study under a specific person rather than a particular program, or geographic location. And for that you need to research who you think would help you the most
craig_shearman1
It makes absolutely no difference whatsoever which you choose. Both have excellent schools and vast opportunities for photographer. Both also have vast competition among photographers. Many of them are photographic geniuses. Some of the geniuses have master's degrees, some are totally self taught. If you have the talent, the skills, the business acumen, etc., you will succeed regardless of which you choose. If you don't, you won't.
j_sevigny
You will live cheaper and experience more hours of sunlight in California. The rest is literally academic.
