glen_johnson
Read the filters article that Philip has posted. You can access it from the photo.net main page.
charlie
You did not state which film types you are considering using. For color film, you might consider starting with the following (4) filters: Skylight-1A, UV-2A, a linear Polarizer and an 81A for greater blue light color correction. This selection will cover most basic light conditions. For black and white, you can start with Yellow 2, Red 25 and a green filter as a basic kit. You should refer to the Kodak Photography Guide or some other publication for filter use. You can get a great deal of information from the "bhphotovideo.com" homepage guide to Tiffen filters. don_baccus
He should definitely read Philip's article. I responding, though, to the suggestion he get a linear polarizer as part of a beginning set of four filters. In another post he mentions he has an N70, so a circular polarizer is definitely in order if he chooses to buy a polarizer.
charlie
You're correct regarding the puchase of a circular polarizer, particularly for an N70 with AF zoom lenses. I stand corrected and am guilty of having my middle aged perspective show through.
jeff_hallett
i certainly plaudit the filter recommendations, most especially the circ. pol. and the 81A or B. the ND4 is a better choice over the ND2 just because i see more need for it. whatever filters you buy, i recommend that you get them each in the largest diameter lens size you have or probably will have and get step up rings for each lens(except the largest). this will save you a considerable sum of money. Filter Connection usually has what you need and they are very helpful and as reasonable as most others.
tim_brown
Add to the list for B&W an orange type "O" or "G" filter. This filter darkens skies more than the yellow K2 but doesn't darken foliage like the red and doesn't darken red objects like the green filter.
