will_foot
<img src=" alt="" /><img src=" alt="" />
Hi everyone

Just bought a new camera and after a week or so I read about shining a torch through the nes to pick up on all the dust - bit scary! How abad is this - does it need a service do you think?

Many thanks

Will

JDMvW
I think it may not all be dust, per se. Looks like some fungus, and that could have etched the glass, reducing the quality of the optics.

BTW, here is a cropped version of your image, cropped and resized to avoid the long loading time of your original:

c_watson1
That lens isn't dusty, it's inhabited! Get a refund, get it cleaned or get another one. 80s aren't hard to come by in better shape.
John Seaman
I don't think it is that difficult to unscrew the front and rear groups for cleaning the accessible surfaces, I've done it with the 135 and 105mm lenses but not the 80mm. If the stuff is internal to the front group. I don't know how hard it would be to open that up. Perhaps worth a try if you bought it "as is".
andre_noble5
Thats ridiculously contaminated with fungus, get rid of it.
will_foot
:( OK thanks guys. Can fungus spread from one lens to another? Sorry for basic questions, not come across this before.
JDMvW
Yes, it can spread (spores, y'know), and may well be in the camera it was mounted on, if they were stored together.
I Googled™ for fungus removal and found a number of services that will try it, but the one at
http://lensn2shutter.com/fungus.html
seems to have useful warnings about the feasibility of the various outcomes.
scott_murphy5
This is not dust, it is microbial growth, principally fungus. This lens may be salvageable, but I think you will have some significant pitting in the coating, if not the glass as well
