Looking for Photo Ops around Sundance, Utah

I finally took the plunge and purchased a Canon Elan IIe set up complete with a collection of lens. I will be initiating the system (other than several rolls I've burned around the house learning how to use it) in Utah at the end of September. Does anyone have any specific photo sites for landscapes or wildlife aroung Sundance (resort where we are staying -about 1hr from Salt Lake City). Thanks for your help.

Step outside your front door, walk 500 feet in any direction & you are there. Or if you don't like walking, shoot from the front door.

The location is excellent & Redford & Co are to be congratulated for doing so much to keep from 'urbanizing' a great area. The man is an environmentalist & it shows at Sundance. Views of Mt. Timp will be excellent & fall color should be top notch. Take a drive around the Alpine loop, or go to Bridal Veil Falls in Provo Canyon if you can tear yourself away from the mountain right at the resort area. Try some dayhikes up Mt. Timp & you will be flabbergasted that so much good and Great scenics are right at your feet. Enjoy it as at Sundance you really are at one top notch photo location.

Dan has given a good list: Mount Timpanogos (sp?), Bridal Veil Falls, and the Alpine Loop are all very photogenic, and very close to Sundance. You can hike around Sundance and also get some good shots. Two things: (1) For the Alpine Loop you'll need a car (seeing the fall colors is the big attraction); and (2) at the peak of the fall season the Alpine Loop can slow down to a crawl. Pick a weekday to drive it if you can.

Another interesting place is Antelope Island. You take I-15 north to Syracuse (its about 30 minutes north of Salt Lake City), and drive west over a causeway to the island. Admission is $6 (it's a state park). It's desolate and unusal, and there is a buffalo herd on the island. Anyway, I find it interesting.

Also, it you have a car and the time, check out the national parks to the south. It will take a several hour drive (this is not a single day trip), but it will be worth it. It's truly beautiful.

Another stop in Salt Lake City is Red Butte Garden and Arboretum. It is just to the southeast of the University of Utah, and has a wonderful collection of flowers and gardens. Admission is $3 for adults.

Hope this helps.

There are so many places around Sundance, and along the Alpine Loop, that you'll probably stay in that area. If you have time, though, you should check out Diamond Fork Canyon. There is a warm spring and waterfall at the end of about a 2-mile, easy hike (not good at estimating distances, tho). From I-15 go south and take the Price exit through Spanish Fork Canyon. You'll see the exit to Diamond Fork Canyon on the left, about a mile into SF Canyon. Drive until you see the sign that says "3-Forks" or maybe "6-Forks," or something like that. It's clearly marked, and you'll see a very small parking lot. Take the trail along the river. It's beautiful!
