We saw this airplane pulling a banner last weekend. It circled around and around for several tims.

The 80-400mm AF-S VR came in handy. I captured the top image at 80mm since the banner was quite a bit behind the plane. I then zoomed in at 400mm for the message.

This is one case that I have an almost uniform blue sky in the background, and you can see some vignetting from the 80-400mm @ 400mm, f5.6, 1/500 sec and ISO 100 on the D4S.

This is a crop of the previous image. The workers have a stencil sheet held onto the tower with magnets. One worker is tracing the letters on the stencil with a marking pen. I presume that the ink will penetrate the stencil sheet and leave an outline on the base surface below. (I'm frequently surprised an the 70-200/4+D800e combo for resolution when only a portion of the image is used. F9.5 at 1/3000 hand held).

00cZL0-548072384.jpg.07cccfb39edb20a224a6c5c3872bae37.jpg

John, the 70-200mm/f4 AF-S VR and its bigger brother the f2.8 VR II are both excellent. When you stop it down to f9.5, I am not surprised at all that it is really sharp.

EXIF shows the ISO was set to 800. If you can use the base ISO 100 and perhaps f5.6 for even less diffraction, you may be able to get slightly better results. That lens also has excellent VR. You can get away with a shutter speed much slower than 1/3000 sec.
