choose f-stops other than what is written on the lens? for example can I select 2.2, or 3.5 or 5.0, etc or I am obligated to choose a one from this list "1.8-2.8-4-5.6-8-11-16-22"
And thanks a lot gerard_bynre
Yes you can work with half stops, or third stops, depending on your camera, and how you have it configured.
ronald_muscio
I'm not familiar with the D60, but most all of the Nikon DSLRs have a menu option of full, 1/2 or 1/3 stops. Therefore, if you have this option set at 1/3 stop you will use the dial on the camera to cycle through the aperture range to set whatever stop you want from 1.8, 2.2,2.5,2.8,3.2,3.5,4.0, etc all the up to 22.0. I don't remember which menu, but either the custom, shooting or set-up menu should have it.

I hope this helps.
Andrew Garrard
Most (all?) of Nikon's lenses with physical aperture stops only have detents at full stops. This controls where the aperture ring physically stops the movement of the lens's aperture lever if you're using a camera that releases the aperture lever completely for the exposure (this is why the lens stops down when you look through it off the camera). However, the D60 only supports you changing the aperture from the camera, not from the lens, because it has no way to tell where you've moved the aperture ring to.

When the camera is in charge of the aperture, the lever is moved by an amount that depends on the aperture that you select from the camera - which is independent of the lens (so long as the aperture is linearly related to aperture, which it is for all remotely recent lenses). I've just had a look in the D60 manual, but I have to say I have absolutely no idea how (or if) you can set the amount by which aperture changes as you move the dials on the camera (the D60 uses the older menu system, and I can't find the settings which are familiar to me on, say, my D800) - but it's certainly a function of the camera and not the lens, so it'll be the same as any other lens you use.

I hope that helps, despite my failure to look things up.
rawad_hamwi
Gerard, Ronald, Andrew..thanks a lot for your replies, you helped me so much!!
Now I have a clear idea how aperture works on this lens with the Nikon D60

Peter_in_PA
You should also know that the D60 will NOT auto-focus that particular lens, because that lens does not have an AF-S motor. It is the old fashioned screwdrive type, which is not supported by the D60. Exposure modes will all work great, just no AF.
rawad_hamwi
Yeah Peter I am aware that the AF system won't work due to the lack of the AF motor in the Nikon D60 body...actually that isn't a problem for me
Peter_in_PA
I'm guessing you'll be using it for still-life, portraits and such.

in my experience it works pretty well for that. The bokeh can be a little harsh, but mine is a great lens... that I almost never use... go figure.
owen_omeara
Yes. Do what you said. It should work fine on a d60.

-O
rawad_hamwi
Exactly Peter I am planning to use it especially for portraits mainly and I should be sure before buying it that it can function normally like a modern Nikon lens, I know autofocus won't work but this isn't a problem. The most important thing is that all the exposure modes will function normally on the D60.
Wouter Willemse
Rawad, honestly if your budget can take it, the newer 50mm f/1.8G is a much better lens, not only will it autofocus on your D60, but it's a better performer at wide apertures (my f/1.8D isn't very good below f/2.8) and the out of focus regions do look much better. I have both the f/1.8D and f/1.8G, and the G version is easily worth the extra money.
rawad_hamwi
Thanks Wouter!!
I know that the G version is better than the D version but I I can't spend more right now :(
I think I can deal with photos taken below f/2.8 by post processing regarding sharpness and constrast
Andrew Garrard
On the basis that it came up and it's going to bug me... is there a way to change the on-camera aperture controls between full-, half- and third- stops as you can on the recent high end? (I've not checked whether the D3300 et al. can do it.)
Andrew Garrard
For historical interest, I think I've persuaded myself that there's no way to change the exposure step size on a D3200, and therefore probably not on anything holding a similar market position. And the shutter speed appears to be controllable in 1/3 stops on the D3200; I assume the same is true of aperture, though ISO seems to be whole stops only (except in auto-ISO). How lucky we are that the D3200 includes important features such as "color sketch" while ignoring nonsense such as letting you set up the controls how you want.

(I must remember that I'm in a good mood with Nikon after the D800 update. Though I've finally got around to checking the rumour that a D5300 can adjust aperture in live view [it can't] - which appears to have been down to a misleading response from a Nikon tech support staff member - so it may balance out.)
