Developing slide film in India?

Recommended Posts

Hi,
I'm in Bangalore. I am now reviving my photography, and decided to do what is possible with slide film efore it all winds down. I finally managed to click my way through a roll of 120 slide film. Now I find nobody in Bangalore does slide film processing any more. Naresh of RK Photoguide put me on to SV Photos in Delhi, ho say they atill do BW and colour negative films, 35mm, 129 and 4x5m but not chromes! For that matter, I gather Wellings in Bangalore also does BW. Naresh warned me that chromes were out, there aren't the chemicals.
So does anybody know where I could send my chrome film? Worst case, what will come out if they cross-process the film (!)? I have a box of 120 Provia 100F in my fridge (the last stock in Delhi before the price rise in 2012 (?), obviously out oif date (at least a year, maybe more).. will I have to give it away ? ;(
Thanks, I thought i'd be the last man standing with a roll of film in his camera :). I wonder whether it's feasible to try home developing... maybe import the powders off the net?

Tetenal supplies E-6 home developing kits in India. E-6 labs are very much there in India. There are options in Bombay , Kolkotta, Ahmedabad, Delhi. I send mine to Ahmedabad for processing.

I run a facebook group called Film photography India. There are two other groups called lovers analog photography, still shooting film india - mumbai.
Bangbw on flickr (bangalore black and white) and also film india.

jjmehta.com - analog photography forum in their user forums.

Thanks, I will follow up on the leads...
Sanjay, would you have the addresses or names and numbers of the labs you use? Naresh did mention Ahmedabad, but couldn't locate the numbers... I will join up the groups you have suggested and scan some of my 35mm slides in my old Coolscan and put them up... but how do you scan mediun format slides or negatives? SV Photo in Delhi had a Coolscan 8000 but they told me they had sold it off.. to whom, I wonder (this was a couple years back)! I am getting a developing jar (tank? flask? cylinder?) and a couple of stainless steel reels for 35 and 120 film, and hopefully can get some training here in Bangalore with the film group :).. at least make a few new friends! And then there's the possibility of instant film while it is available...is it worthwhile on medium format (I can get a holder for the Pentax 645)?
On a minor note, how should the exposed roll be kept: right now I have just left it in the roll film holder, will there be light leakage if it is taken out, should one cover it or wrap a tape round it or something? There's no light tight container as there used to be for 35mm rolls.
The spindle (the thing the film is rolled on to) is given away along with the exposed film, right? Or does it have to be returned by the developer?
So many questions... but that only makes it more fun!

Buy the Tetenal E-6 kit kit and develop your film at home. It si super easy, and far less expensive than sending to a lab.
I avoided home development for the firts 10 years of my photography hobby, being scared by the online comments about how difficult it was. Nonsense, it is easy !
And fun and relaxing too. I develop my rolls in my kitchen sink at night, listening to the radio. All you need is a Paterson hand developing tank ($20-$45 depending upon the number of rolls it will process at one time), a digital cooking thermometer, a styrofoam container for holding a hot water bath, some empty water bottles for the chemicals, a watch or timer, and the Tetenal kit.
Ive done over a hundred rolls, never a problem.
see this video which shows how easy it is.

Awesome! I remember doing E6 a long time back at the University College of North Wales, Bangor where I did my PhD in forestry... the photo expert was a gentleman from India, I remember. My lilies came a bit washed out, and the composition was bad, but that's how I started... later got my chromes developed through the mail.
I am locating some guys with the equipment, maybe even the chemicals... I will try to get the whole thing together now!
I put the whole roll film holder in the cooler until I can figure out how to remove it safely :)
