Hello Nikon People, and a good Social Media Nikon Wednesday to you. It's Social Media Wednesday (for me, anyway!) because there I was in the middle of a puppy portrait session with a breeder, and I recalled that her Facebook page was missing some banner/cover art. Having recently helped out some other clients with the delicate process of finding pieces of images that will do well in that slot's awkward 8:3 aspect ratio, I was able to have that long rectangle in mind as we disturbed her new litter's peace and quiet. Happily, I was able to see the FB banner shape in my head as my skilled puppy-wrangling assistant arranged the little beasts, and we got in a few shots specifically with Facebook page decoration in mind. This is starting to be a regular part of my thinking as I set up the shots I'm told are needed - I try to remember that the client will be very happy, at some point, to have a shot that was composed from the beginning with that specific use in mind.

Shot anything with one of the social media platforms specifically in mind?
I was pleasantly surprised to see such low tide at the Pemaquid Lighthouse when I dropped by last Friday after visiting Monhegan Island in Maine. Handheld (ugh!) - as I was with non-photographers and tried to get it done as soon as possible.

00cjiI-550113584.jpg.999fc667deff979b89900afb2a24c61b.jpg

Yup, kinda sorta. Some of my recent infrared experiments have been composed with Facebook banners in mind - including the last of my three photos here this week.

And some are just goofing around to amuse like minded Facebook friends who have equally weird tastes in backyard and garden photos.

After a few weeks of experimenting with monochrome IR conversions I finally settled on a look for color IR. I was surprised earlier this month to discover the D2H will meter accurately through a stack of filters so dark I can barely see through them: #25 red; a pair of stacked polarizers; even a 2x neutral density. Finally occurred to me today to see if it'll also accurately white balance through the lens with the stacked filters set for IR. Sure enough, it did the trick. Much closer to the look I was struggling to get in Lightroom with color IR.

All with the D2H, 24/2.5 Tamron Adaptall, and a stack of filters for IR effect.

Wood boring beetle graffiti-etched dead tree.
