Mary Doo
I am so behind. I didn't know about this until now and it is back-ordered. To those of you who have it: Is it really that good?

When do you think it will be available again?
georges_pelpel
First you have to make sure your lens(es) is(are) compatible. The new converter only work with the most recent lenses.
My Nikon AF-S 500mm f/4 II, for instance, is not compatible, nor is my Nikon AF-S 300mm f/4. A real bummer if you ask me and a blunder from Nikon.
ilkka_nissila
In this chart

https://www.nikonusa.com/en_INC/IMG/Assets/Common-Assets/Images/Teleconverter-Compatibility/EN_Comp_chart.html

the 300/4 AF-S is listed as compatible with the TC-14E III. Interestingly it seems to be the only lens with an aperture ring that is said to be compatible.
mike_halliwell
Good find Ilkka!

What's wrong with the 105mm 2.8G AF-S VR Macro I wonder??
ShunCheung
Nikon introduced the TC-14E III along with the 400mm/f2.8 E lens back in May: http://www.photo.net/nikon-camera-forum/00caD8

I am not sure that the new TC has ever been available in camera stores yet.

On that thread from May, we discussed this compatibility chart on Nikon Japan's web site: http://imaging.nikon.com/lineup/lens/teleconverters/af-s_tc-14e_3/spec.htm
It looks like the TC-14E III is only compatible with AF-S VR E or G lenses without an aperture ring.. There could be some typos in those charts from Nikon. I wouldn't treat any one of them as gospel. Wait for availability and correct information from actual testing.
don_cooper
I don't think you'll get any opinions yet if the release date of August 28 still holds. I've been looking for opinions also but there just aren't any yet.
ShunCheung
Don, I am sure you are aware that having seen and used a piece of equipment is not a prerequisite for having opinions. :-)

To me, VR is not important on long telephoto lenses, as I tend to use them on sturdy tripods as well as with fast shutter speeds to freeze action. Therefore, my 300mm/f2.8 remains to be a 1998 AF-S version (introduced in 1996) with an aperture ring, and that is one lens I would most likely use a 1.4x TC on. I have longer f4 AF-S VR lenses, but even a 1.4X TC makes them too slow for me.

So unfortunately, this new TC is only of limited usefulness from my point of view.

Mary Doo
Thanks. I see, no one has it yet. I just pre-ordered and hope to get it by next month before heading out to a trip.
