Suggestions on Colleges?

I'm getting my Liberal Arts Associates Degree at a local Community College. After that, I plan to transfer to the mainland and have compiled colleges that I'd like to attend (if my photography doesn't move as far along forward as I would like it to). The schools in consideration are SVA, SAIC, Brooks Institute, SCAD, and University of Texas (McCombs School of Business). At SVA, SAIC, and Brooks Institute, SCAD, I would major in Photography (I'm trying to become a Travel-Lifestyle photographer, so a lot of different work can fall under it) and UT, I'd major in Business. If anybody has any suggestions on other majors that can help me move forward and still, in a way, center around photography or any other Colleges that I haven't thought of, that'd be great! If anybody also has any opinions about the schools mentioned above, let me know too!

If you want to be a travel-leisure magazine photographer, you need to be able to write. They will hire a writer who can also photograph, but you won't find too many opportunities for photographers or photographers who can write. Schools like Brooks have classes specifically on travel photography as part of your education. That is what you need to look for in the catalog. If the school just offers art or commercial classes without specially addressing travel/leisure, you may not get the skills that you need.

That said, many travel/leisure photographers are not trained photographers. Going to a photo school will provide you the information, and at a good school, the professional rigor before you start off on your career. Also, many people are now buying camera equipment and calling themselves photographers-and some publishers are settling for that quality level. This means that you will have to compete basically on price alone. You will NOT make a living this way.

You will have to balance the education with the cost of the school/supplies/equipment/etc. All the photo programs you mentioned will result in a pretty high cost. A very few students work enough to basically pay for their education, but most accumulate a large student debt.

A business education is EXTREMELY valuable. You don't need to major in it, but you need to know how to research, set up and run a business. I try to have all my photo students minor in business, with a concentration in entrepreneurship.

Lastly, remember that as a travel/leisure photographer, you will never take a vacation. All your travel will be work or scouting for work. There is a BIG difference between these functions.
