If your image were a written sentence or paragraph, then you get As for grammar and spelling. IOW, technically fine. But what is the message, and where is the tone? The image is confusing to this viewer. Is the goal scored? Are the players celebrating or in despair?

So much analysis! Presumably this is just one pic of many. I doubt the OP is putting it out as the greatest shot he has taken, he presumably has others that show a goal etc etc. This pic anyway could indeed be part of a great series. Such intellectualization. Now the OP has to go and study Arnheim to take some hockey pics...

Not true. You've misunderstood.

The OP needs to study Arnheim, and others, to learn how to "edit a contact sheet". Which is to say, how to pick the one shot, out of 700 he took at a game, that matches his intent and actually communicates something significant to a viewer. And hopefully with some practice he will learn to get 5 or 10 shots each game that are worth keeping.

Taking technicaly good photographs is relatively easy. Knowing which ones have greater artistic value isn't.

A simple example that gets repeated often is that mentioning "Rhein II" by Andreas Gursky in almost any photography forum will bring out several people who adamantly state that it is a very poor art, and they wouldn't hang it in their home if it were given to them!

But look at the simple facts. 1) They have seen a 1024x768 image on a computer monitor, not the 73"x143" print mounted on acrylic, and 2) it may be a lot harder to find even one person with a Master of Fine Arts degree that won't say it is exceptional art. Not to mention that it sold for $4.3 and no other photograph has.

Knowing what is good art is not a universal characteristic of photographers!
