Posting images to forum threads using Flickr HTML

dcstep

Recommended Posts

Up until this morning, I've posted images from Flickr by selecting the HTML code at Flickr, then selecting the HTML input here at PN, inserting it and then submitting. Now, I can see the image in the Preview of my post, but when I submit I get a long message saying it can't be accepted because it has some elements that spammers might use. When I try to remove those elements from the HTML code, the code no longer works.

Did Photo.net just change its policy or did Flickr just change the format of its HTML code? Is there a work around so that I can post my Flickr images quickly and easily by embedding, using BBCode or anything besides uploading the images to Photo.net as host?

Thanks in advance.

Thanks Bob. Here's the HTML code from Flickr (they just made some changes yesterday):

<iframe src=" Another Broncos Sunrise height="534" width="800" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen oallowfullscreen msallowfullscreen>

If you dig through Flickr by opening up the page <a href=" Another Broncos Sunrise you find the full size image is at http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7401/11445661793_1218567e85_h.jpg and if you include that in HTML with tags this is what you get:

The new version of Flickr complicates some things, including embedding the correct HTML to photo.net.

In the example below, I had to navigate a few page clicks and the "view image" option in Firefox to get to the HTML just for the photo itself, rather than the Flickr page on which it's hosted. Then I copied and pasted the HTML to the tree/broccoli shaped icon on photo.net's reply box:

*In this next example I dragged and dropped the photo from Flickr to photo.net. Again, unlike the old Flickr view, I had to navigate to the page on which the photo was isolated. Different browsers handle this stuff slightly differently.

Flickr made a change yesterday - there is now an "embed" code as well as the old HTML and BB code - and "embed" is the default. Select HTML and posting will work like before: http://www.photo.net/test-posting-forum/00c1XO

Note: it is in violation of the flickr TOS to post images hosted on flickr without linking back to the original (i.e. clicking on the image needs to take you back to the image hosted on flickr) - none of the "solutions" offered above fulfill that agreement.

Have you tried it Dieter?

When I do, I receive this message:

We had a problem processing your entry:

Because of abuse by spammmers, we can't accept submission of any HTML containing any of the following tags:

applet area base body button div embed fieldset font form frame frameset head html iframe ilayer input layer link marquee meta object option pre script select span style textarea /applet /area /base /body /button /div /embed /fieldset /font /form /frame /frameset /head /html /iframe /ilayer /input /layer /link /marquee /meta /object /pre /script /span /style
Please back up using your browser, correct it, and resubmit your entry.

I can see the image in my preview, but when I Submit, the message shows up instead.

Been waiting for comments to accumulate in this thread in hopes of finding out how to tunnel down to the original image on Flickr Photostream where it gives all the sizes available like it used to.

Now, whenever I click on a Flickr hosted image from here or any other site, I get the big display gallery with black background and popup arrow driven slide show type presentation. I can't drag and drop the image from this to get the EXIF data or find "Image Properties" directly on the Flickr site.

I don't understand why folks need to post Flickr hosted images within a PN thread when it's so easy to upload directly here. When I was able to drag and drop one of my own images from Flickr to my desktop, I could immediately upload it into a PN thread from my desktop.

Here's what I do in Windows 7:

Right-click on the image anywhere you find it. A box will come up saying "View all sizes: Medium...etc." Select a size. That'll take you a page titled "Photo / All Sizes". Below that, it'll say, "Download Download the xx size of this photo" in blue. Right-click the blue and select "Copy link address". Paste that into Photo.net and paste that into the flowing HTML between the quotes <img src+"paste here">

My only problem with that method is it doesn't link to Flickr when you click on the image. Since I own the images, that doesn't bother me too much, but I do like the convenience of people being able to click over to Flickr to easily see the images in larger sizes.

Just did in this test thread: http://www.photo.net/test-posting-forum/00c1XO using the HTML code (not the embed one). On flickr, under the code to be copied one needs to select HTML from the three options given: embed, HTML, BBcode. I have not tried the embed one - my previous post was about the "old" HTML code still working (and there is no reason for it not to as it hasn't been changed).

There's a lot of discussion in the Help forum on flickr - apparently, many sites don't like the iframes; hence one can add this change/addition to the long list of changes flickr made that don't seem to be all that well thought through.

Let's see if it works here too:
<a title="boat garage by beachwalker2008, on Flickr" href=" boat garage src="http://farm7.staticflickr.com/6045/7025538917_45501c246a.jpg" alt="boat garage" width="333" height="500" />
Trying to use the embed code fails with the same error message as shown in a thread above.

Sorry Dieter, but when I inspect your code it doesn't have "iframes" in it, instead is is "img" code. Did you edit it, or did it come straight from Flickr?

Maybe it's because the image was posted in March 2012. Could you post an image to Flickr today and then try to post it to Photo.net from Flickr? Sorry for the bother.

OK, for the third time: I did not use the "embed" iframe code but the HTML img code straight from flickr. All my posts have been about the HTML code still working fine - not about the new embed code NOT working. In essence, there is (and always has been) a working way to link to flickr images from PN. You are just using the wrong code - the one flickr added yesterday and made the default. Select the correct (old) one, and things are working just fine.

Here is a new image from flickr - it doesn't matter from when the image is, it only matters that the correct code is used.

<a title="Contrails by beachwalker2008, on Flickr" href=" Contrails src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7312/11421808353_a2a8a220c9.jpg" alt="Contrails" width="500" height="331" />
The only thing the "embed" iframes code would do is overlay the image with the title and photographers name (good) and a huge white flickr logo (bad, bad, bad). Apparently, the new code would also allow to track view of embedded images - I have no clue as to how though.

Here's the flickr blog post announcing the new embed feature: http://blog.flickr.net/en/2013/12/18/flickr-web-embeds/

Very weird; if I go to an older picture and look at the HTML code, then go to a new picture and look at the HTML, the new one is in the correct format. If I look at the Embed code on the new picture and then click on the HTML button, it gives me the Embed code, not the HTML code. Clearly they've got a bug and it's not impacting 100% of the users.

Test:

The ease of access to the embed code depends on whether you're using the new/beta view or old Flickr view. I'm trying the new view at the moment, and while I like the look (photos look better against the black/dark gray background), the interface is less intuitive than the old view.

Another thing - not related to this discussion - the new view for Flickr requires logging in to view the EXIF data for another photographer's photos. Pain in the neck. And even when I'm logged in the new Flickr view is inconsistent in showing metadata.

Entirely possible. I just went to an image from 2007 and there was no embed code option at all at first; only after I refreshed the page.

I assume that is when EXIF data are indeed available - some users strip them before uploading and others choose to hide them.
