Hello, I am a sophomore in highschool, and I really want to use photography to make some money. I'd love to hear ideas on how to do this, i.e. jobs, assistant, selling prints, etc. Please let me know, I really enjoy photography and I feel like this is the next logical step. Here is my website www.corbinwalpphoto.com

In high school, I worked part time for a local newspaper shooting sports and news. One of the things the paper liked to do (it was small town and very small-time) was to run group photos of local softball/baseball teams, so I was able to sell prints of the group shots to team members. Getting a connection with a newspaper, even the smallest weekly, is good because it gets you out there shooting a lot and meeting lots of people who will know you as a photographer. Also worked at a local library on public access cable TV production. Shot a few senior portraits for classmates. If you can find a local photographer you can work for as an assistant, that's ideal because you can learn while you earn.

The key to making money in any business is- to be a better salesperson.

Being different helps, so does being better, but there are plenty of photographers out there who are "different" from other

photographers, and the ranks of technically and/or aesthetically " better" photographers far outnumbers the number of

successful (however you choose to define success, but since Corbin is asking about using photography to make money, I

assume he means exactly that: making money) photographers.

The secret of that find of success is being a great salesperson who reliably and honestly fulfills the needs of his

customers. Creating a better product helps, but chasing uniqueness for its own sake is a dead end.

A successful photographer who makes money is part artist, part craftsman, part technician and part salesman. An MBA from Harvard won't guarantee you won't make images that bore people to death. You have to learn how to make images that other people want. I have made tens of thousands of dollars over the years selling photos and never took a business class. I know photographers who grew rich who had no business sense at all but people could not resist their images. I know others who were sharp at business who did other things for a living because their images were crap and they could not sell them. I know others who were great at film flam and sold crappy images. How many posters have you seen in peoples' houses of a group of dogs playing cards, or portraits of Elvis on velvet? Crap sometimes sells, but to say all you need to know is how to "sell" is naïve.

Corbin it is like anything. You can offer your photography services to everyone. Specializing is good and bad. There are positives and negatives to everything. What kind of photographer do you want to be? Do you want to be an assignment photographer? Shooting weddings can be lucrative. Are you living in a Hispanic or Jewish area? Quinces and barmitzvahs can be lucrative too. Maybe you just want to shoot portraits. Portrait photographers who specialize in photography for business publications can make a good living too. There are as many ways to make a living in photography as there are types of photography. It can be difficult to make a living as a photographer though. I have had a very hard time myself. I do not try hard enough. I have a friend who shoots with a drone, and he is getting all sorts of commercial work shooting shopping centers and hotels and even private homes. He will be shooting an event with his drone too, getting paid thousands of dollars to do it. There REALLY are all sorts of ways to make money as a photographer Corbin.
