Sticky Shutter Fm2n

My "new" late model FM2n was recently CLA'd by Nippon Photo in NYC. The shutter seems to stick open intermittently

now. I returned it to them where the gentleman tested it several times in front of me, went through all the speeds and

could not replicate the problem. He even took it into the back and opened up the camera.

Today, bam its did it again for me.

Perhaps I am doing something incorrect?

I never had this issue with any of my other FM2's and I owned several. I purchased this one because it was a low user

from the 1990s and one of the last models.

I do squeeze the shutter slowly. I notice in the shop is was firing away quickly. Im not sure if that has anything to do with

it. It happened on 1/30 and 1/250 today.

When it sticks open I have to spin the shutter speed dial to get it to close.

The two cameras have completely different types of shutters, so any similarities in behavior are coincidental. Intermittent problems are very hard to diagnose. There is probably a bit of old, dried out lube somewhere, or something was missed on reassembly. You need to find a way to make it fail in a reasonable consistent way.

BTW, if it really from the end of the FM2n's production, it won't have the honeycomb titanium shutter blades. It will have smooth aluminum blades.

Mr. Obvious checking in. It should NOT do that. It needs to be repaired by somebody who can deal with that problem, intermittent or not. I've used Nikons forever (I just got a "40" pin from NPS for that number of years as a member) and don't ever remember that being a problem with any Nikon I've owned or worked with. Best of luck with your camera and your photography!

"Is the mirror bumper sticky (rotting foam) causing the mirror not to instantly return? That may have some

bearing on erratic shutter issues"

I hope not since it was just CLA'd and the foam was replaced. I did recently change the focusing screen

but that shouldnt have any bearing. I loaded a roll of film today and it has not been having the problem. I

dont know what to do.

Yes the shutter blades are smooth not honeycombed

"Did it happen before the CLA? If only after the CLA it could be that he replace the new foam with

something too thick and the mirror sometimes doesn't go all the way up. The shutter only released after the

mirror goes all the way up."

When I bought the camera I immediately took it in for the CLA before using it. So I dont know the answer to

that. It was fine yesterday and today BTW, until I used 1/60 then it was a little off. I could hear it. It was a

little slow. Then the second time on 1/60 it was fine.

I guess its back to Nippon Photo Clinic tomorrow

Took it back to Nippon, the guy plays with it for 10 minutes then declares "the shutter is nine, not sticking"

I'm like, "Yes because to does it intermittently" !!! Especially after sitting for a while. If you fire it a few times

the stick stops.

So they are keeping it again for further checking. I have a feeling they are going to call me in a week to tell

me its working fine.

 • 2 weeks later...

Picked up the camera from Nippon yesterday. It seems to be working fine now. they really offered no

explanation as to what the problem was. They just said they had to open the shutter and clean it again. But

now I notice a very tine mark on one of the blades. Maybe its my imagination and maybe its nothing. I am

attaching a pic.
00cYkC-547927884.thumb.jpg.656ae1628cdeccf189e2031a49f0fcc0.jpg
