joe_willmore
I'm shooting with a Nikon D7000 and have a couple of older Nikon bodies (like a D70 and D90) as backups. I have an SB600 and a couple of cheap speed lights I've used as slaves. One has corroded, I'm looking to replace/upgrade.
I'm looking for recommendations for non-Nikon speed lights (like Yongnuos) that will work with the Nikon commander mode. I know I could get pocket wizards or triggers or just use as slaves but I like the experience I've had with the commander mode but would prefer not invest $300-700 for a new speed light (b/c mine take a beating, a lot of use and I tend to turn them over quickly).
Recommendations anyone?
mihai_ciuca
The most competent Yongnuo flash is YN-568EX. Knows even HSS, powerful, able to be slave in Nikon CLS system.
For a better budget Nissin flashes are great. I personally have Di700 (only slave in CLS) and Di866 MkII and MG8000, both acting as slaves and as commander. I am very happy with my Nissin flashes, they are built well, as much as polished as Nikon SB's are and easier to use due a much simple and intuitive interface.
There are other manufacturers like Sigma, Metz, Meike, Triopo but I have not a first hand experience with their products.
rodeo_joe1
+1 to recommending the Nissin Di866. A really reliable and well-built flash with the added advantage of having a secondary sub flash for catchlights/fill and quick change battery holders - where all the batteries fit in the same direction. Nice touch! Also slightly more powerful than an SB-910 according to reviews. Mine certainly measures as having a higher GN than any other hotshoe gun I've used.
