w._berry
I have a tuff time with accurate focusing through the screen on my 501c outfit. I am considering getting one of the newer accumate-d screens with the split prism and the blocked grid lines. Will this work okay on my 501c and are they available used yet. Anyone know were I can get one new for a good price?

I am considering getting one of the newer accumate-d screens with the split prism and the blocked grid lines. Will this work okay on my 501c and are they available used yet. Anyone know were I can get one new for a good price?

When I was looking for my Hassy, it came down to a choice between a cheaper 501 with the old screen, or a more expensive 501c with an accumate-d screen. Once I compared the two, it was more than justification to get the 501c.
Incidently, I got it from Hawaiian Camera Supply. They have a decent listing on the web of new and used equipment at: http://www.hassy.com/ Additionally, I found the customer service to be very accommodating.Having just visited there, I found the following listing (Used):Hasselblad Acute-Matte Grid Screen $245
-I don't know if this is a good price since, as I haven't shopped around. Also, it doesn't have the split prism, which should cost more, but at least this should give you an idea of what you may be looking at.
paul_lasiter1
I upgraded from the standard Acute Matte that came with my 503 to the Acute Matte D with a microprism/split prism. I find that this has been helpful with focusing. The Acute Matte D is brighter on the edges than the standard Acute Matte with similar brightness in the center. The slit image is fairly small but can be helpful in focusing.
It is highly unlikely that that you can get a good/discounted price on the Acute Matte D---they haven't been around long enough. You can probably get a trade-in on your old Acute Matte Screen--I suspect in the $100 range. Hawaiian Camera is great. Del Camera is also a good place to try. william_steinhurst
Have you checked to make sure that the depth of field preview is turned off? I don't mean this as a criticism, but I found myself struggling to focus clearly with the 501C the other day and finally realized that I had left the preview stopped down. (Only lost about 5 stops of light in the viewfinder!)
albert_butler
On Aug 5, '97 WOLF CAMERA of Nashville TN @ 720 Thompson Lane-- Phone 615-298-5462 received a half dozen used Hassy focusing screens. Several are the split sscreen variety. They were priced reasonably. They also have several other Hassy bodies and accesories along with some Pentax bodies and lenses. jack_chase
I also bought an Acute-matte D split image screen from Hawaiian Camera.I love the thing. I agree with all the comments above, both about the screen and about dealing with Hawaiian Camera. I have had significant dealings with them recently, and have been very pleased. james_smith1
I have a 501C that I have replaced the original screen with a accutemat D split prism. It's is very bright and the microprism is a big help in focusing. I also have an older 500c that was almost impossible to focus with the original screen. I sent it to Brightscreen in Cleveland, Tennesse and they replaced the screen. You have to get a "technician" to install a new screen in a 500c. The "Brightscreen" appears to be identical to the Hassy Accutemat D . I bought the Accutemat D from KEH camera brokers in Atlanta, I think it was around $245 in excellent condition. The Brightscreen cost around $325 which included shipping and installation. Brightscreen returned my camera in about 7 days , I was really happy with the service at the time, but if I had it to do over I'd probably trade it for a 500cm or 501C that has a screen the owner can change. john_rogers3
I have been meaning to get feedback on this for a long, long time because i own the split grid, but want to know if the microprism is easier to focus with those fine, etched diaganol lines.I have heard from one person that it is indeed easierr to focus. it does not have the grid lines, but rather fine lines that run from top left to bottom right, that are visible when image is in focus.I understand from this one person that it is easier to focus in dim liting, like at a dim reception. He stated that the micro prism was easier to focus than tiny split prism in the 42217 in dim conds.please feel free to add your experience. It will determine which screen i buy to add to my growingcollection.
