grousseau
PS CS4 does not respond when I go to print. This is a new problem, I've been using this set up for over two years and I've never had this problem. My set up is PS CS4, Windows XP with a Epson 3880 printer. The only problem is when I hit 'print", it takes 5 minutes or more for the printer dialogue to appear and the any changes I need to make take extra time. The system is not on line so I know there are no viruses, I did hook up the system and downloaded all the new updates, no change. I've uninstalled and reinstalled PS, no change, I've deleted my preferences, no change. I did get a message "Apphangxprocb1". I've not uninstalled the printer yet. Only with the print action am I having a problem, other than that PS is working fine.Any help will be greatly appreciated.
frank_skomial
See if you can print the same file from other application?
Problem could be with your printer driver, and not PS CS4.
jcuknz
An old trick worth remembering when you uninstalled and re-installed .... did you reboot following each proceedure?
mike_earussi1
If you're getting a response but it's just slow then I'd check to see if your available ram is being used up, thereby forcing CS4 to use the hard drive as a scratch disk.

grousseau
Mike ,I think the RAM is fine, 8191 MB total, available 6488 MB, Photoshop is the only program in this system, now I'll uninstall, reboot and reinstall....never a dull moment. Again thanks for the advice...see what happen next.
gR
Bill C
You might want to try the "Windows Test Print," which is mainly a bunch of text. You can probably find this by opening up the print driver, as though you were going to change some settings. If this also has the long delay, then you would at least know that Photoshop is innocent.

Something else you might try is two prints in a row. Sometimes there is a driver option, I don't recall what it's called, that lets the machine take its time UNLESS something else comes up. In this case, a second print job could cause the first one to spit out right away. Good luck with the troubleshooting.
grousseau
Thanks Bill, just uninstalled and reinstalled PS and rebooted between each procedure, no change ...so now on to the printer....I'll try Bill's suggestion and if no luck. I install & reinstall & remember to reboot between each the printer. Let you know how it goes. Thanks all.
mike_earussi1
How large are your files? If you have very large files and have preview selected it can take quite a while to display the preview. If you are using preview try turning it off to see if that makes any difference.
Bill C
gail, something else occurs to me. Perhaps another print job has gotten "stuck" in the print queue, and each time you attempt to print, the garbage job attempts, unsuccessfully, to print. So your new job must wait patiently in line until your system tries, and fails, to print the garbage job.

If you double-click on the printer icon, it should open a status window for the printer, showing the jobs ("Document name" and "status", etc. If there's one sitting there already, it probably has some sort of garbage in it that causes it to hang. I think you'll be able to right-click to get an option to delete.

If you leave that status window open, you should be able to send a test job and see what happens. The job will show up on the list, updating the status as it changes. When it disappears from the list, that means the job has been passed along to the printer.

ps. that driver option I was thinking of earlier is under printer>>properties>>advanced. Make sure that "start printing immediately" is selected, as opposed to "start printing after last page is spooled."

Hopefully one of these things will be helpful.
