D7100 with MB-D15 and AA batteries, how many shots?

How many shots can I expect using the MB-D15 grip to run a D7100 off AA batteries? I am going somewhere where recharging may be impossible and need to know (I don't own the grip yet).
Most likely I will not be using VR or the camera flash. I will need to quickly review and save/delete images on screen.

what experiences do you have?
thanks

It depends on the kind of battery you will be using.
A typical alkaline is about the same capacity of an Ni-MH, and a group of 6 is 1x or 1.5x of a single EN-EL15.
Don't use carbon-zinc, they only give dozens of shots before starting to heat up and leak.
Going somewhere cold? Do prepare for the climate!

It seems crazy to spend $300 extra on EN-EL15 batteries that I won't need again. The resale value is <50%. Or I could buy the grip, with the option of reselling for a decent price, but then the grip with that many batteries is significant bulk and weight. You have the advantage that you can probably get AA batteries in many places, but no advantage in operation that I can see. Maybe carrying 7-8 EN-EL15's is the way to go?

Just an interesting question. The AA holder, the MS-D14 says it takes 6 x AA, but all the pictures seem to show 8..like here...

Guess it's an optical illusion and there are only 2 cells on the ground floor!

If indeed you're going 'cold', putting a couple of 15's in a pocket next to your body keeps them toastie whereas a grip full of AAs cools down quickly.

To "quickly review" images for deletion, with the time pressure of limited battery life, is to set up the deletion of images you want to keep. Cards are cheap; accidentally deleted images will cost you. Whatever you do about batteries, take enough memory so you don't have to do a quick review and save/delete.

I would take lithium AA batteries. While they are expensive, they last longer in cameras. And they are a lot lighter. Make sure you set your LCD on your camera back to the shortest time setting as it is a major use of camera battery power. I try and never review and delete in camera for the reasons already mentioned. Plus it uses battery power. Buy a Hyperdrive Color Space and download your images from your cards. It works off of a battery, USB port or regular power. If you take lithium batteries, keep them in their original packaging if traveling by air.
