sue_block1
I Have a Nikon D700

It is in aperture priority

I am not sure what I have done - but suddenly when I press the shutter there is a delay of about 10 or so seconds before the shutter releases. After it releases the r and JOB comes on the top panel?

I do not have the camera in LV or in bulb mode on. The wheel is turned to the s mode . The exposure delay mode in the menu is off.

Please advise

ShunCheung
Self timer?
Wouter Willemse
Maybe another option possible too... If you're making long exposures, it could be the Long Exposure NR, which takes a second shot after the original ('real') exposure for the same duration as the expsoure. So a 10sec exposure will cost 20sec instead. While making the second (black) exposure, it'll show "JOB" on the top LCD.
Long exposure NR can be turned off, in the shooting menu.
sue_block1
Thanks for your response

The only way I know how to switch off the self-timer mode is turning the wheel on top of the camera to the S Mode? Is there any other way. Because even though on the S mode the issue still prevails
Wouter Willemse
Sue, the "S mode" might be a bit confusing here, as the Mode button also has "S mode" (as in PASM)... but yes, with the drive-mode dial (the wheel on the left of the body) in Single shot mode (S), the self-timer should be off.
So, what is the shutter speed you are using?

sue_block1
The shutter speed say LO . I have tried to change it to another speed in Aperture Priority mode. However the shutter speed does not move even though the f stop moves from f.29 to f22
sue_block1
Sorry I meant from F2.8 to f22. The shutter speed moves in shutter priority and in Manual mode.

Sue
kari_oinonen
Hello, some random checks:

Do you get any picture when the camera "behaves"?
The delay is 10 s. That is possible only by self timer- left side wheel; or via timed shooting - in shooting menu. Maybe check the second one also.
While taking a picture - look to the lens from front and see if you get any movement in the aprture. Test also values like F11 or F16. DOF preview button should give you the same movement.
What is your ISO -value.
Battery charge level.
Take a picture without a lens and/or change the lens. See what happens.
mike_halliwell
I know the self-timer is set to OFF on the top dial, but if you change the time of the self-timer to say 2 secs, does that change the delay? I wonder if the contact for the self timer switch can be stuck ON even though the dial has moved?

The shutter speed say LO . I have tried to change it to another speed in Aperture Priority mode

errrr, you can't change the shutter speed in Aperture priority Mode, only the camera can do that. If it says LO, it's very, very dark....below 0EV. The shutter will OPEN and stay open until it's had enough.

The message should say 'Job nr' , and indicates the exposure time was longer than 1 second and that Long Exposure Noise Reduction is definitely switched ON! The camera takes a blank frame of the same duration as the shutter speed without opening the shutter and subtracts the noise 'picture' from this second picture from the first. Whilst it is doing this 'Job nr' blinks....ie. if the shutter was open for 5 seconds it will flash for 5 seconds.

If you're absolutely sure Long Exposure NR is OFF (Shooting Menu, and 15th item down)..........it's time for a Hard Reset! Page 196 of the Manual. QUAL button & +/- button together for 2 seconds.

Just occurred to me, this might sound really, really daft but are you hearing the shutter CLOSE after around 10 seconds of exposure??
mike_halliwell
Sue B, I can't help but notice this the second post in a short time that's related to your D700 not doing what it says it should in the Nikon Manual. Either you have a very sick camera or ??

Did you resolve the inability to turn off Auto Bracketing? http://www.photo.net/nikon-camera-forum/00bwVa

.........as you never replied to the help given.
gable_ray
Check the flash mode. I would seem that you have red-eye reduction set.
I've done that.
mike_halliwell
Gable, I don't understand where you got this data from?
gable_ray
Mike, sorry, but i jumped in late and didn't throughly read the problem. However, on the Nikons that I own, when using flash and the red-eye reduction setting, a shutter delay of at least one second results while a rapid pre-flash occurs to reduce or eliminate red-eye. Think the OP is experincing a longer delay.
kari_oinonen
I am able to re-create the behaviour that Sue described.

Just follow exactly these steps and you may be able to duplicate the behaviour:
Take your camera from your camera bag, where you have a lot of other stuff like lenses, batteries etc.
Turn the camera power on. My camera has now S in shooting mode and A in exposure mode.
The exposure shows lo, otherwise normal displays and behaviour.
Press the shutter button. This results about 10 sec exposure. Tested indoors.
Only if I have D-setting active I get -Job Nr- display after the exposure. In my other settings no long exposure nr is set, so I do not get anything but that exposure end at about 10 sec and I am where I started after turning the power on.

But, there may be also something else going on too, cameras do have a limited life span.
blumesan
Kari-

When my camera is in my bag, where I have lots of other stuff....
I always have the lens cap in place. Your step by step instructions do not mention removing the lens cap. Is this an intentional omission?
mike_halliwell

I am able to re-create the behaviour that Sue described

.....except the delay! The fact you both get LO, is you try this in very dark 'indoors' conditions!

Well, all I can say is mine doesn't do this!

Turn camera on.....set Single frame...check. Aperture priority....Check

Exposure shows 1/3 sec @ f5...my living room......not as dark as yours.

Your's is LO, because it's dark....very dark. Lens cap maybe?

What are D-Settings Active? Active D-Lighting? Mine are ON...AUTO to be precise.

I take the shot.....click.....Do I get a Job nr? No! Too short maybe? I put my hand over the lens to force a longer exposure..about 20 seconds. Shutter opens....wait ~ 20 seconds....shutter closes, ready for next shot. No pause, no message...nothing.

I switch ON Long Exposure NR and repeat the experiment and I get flashing 'Job nr', and a 20 second lock-up whilst it takes the 2nd noise-image.

What's going on?? Don't know.....others need to chime in here.

I'm on Firmware A 1.03 and B 1.02
kari_oinonen
Taking the lens cap off was not included in those steps. That is correct. So I guess that the answer is - yes.
I formulated my previous post while walking our dog, some time to use for thinking.

Cheers

mike_halliwell
Sue, if your camera really has had 2 fairly disabling faults in as many weeks, I'd definitely get it serviced. Intermittent faults that fix themselves are a nightmare!

If you carry out any paid work, this camera is in NO WAY reliable and very much unlike anyone else's D700 I've ever heard of. They command top dollar secondhand for a very good reason.
sue_block1
Thanks Mike for your input - I am not a professional photographer and still make many errors. I hear what you are saying . However, the mistakes re latest issue could have been mine.
