Strange problem - D800 w 24-120 f4

Dear members, I am facing a strange situation and seek for your support if anyone have seen a similar problem.

I am a D800 owner and use it with some AF-D lenses and also have 16-35, 105 mm Af-S nikkor lenses that I use without a problem.

Recently I sold my 28-300 lens and bought a second hand 24-120 mm f4 nikkor lens. When I bought the lens I tried it with a D7000 and

the lens is in a mint and proper condition.

Here comes the point : the lens does not auto-focus and expose on my D800. On live view, it auto focuses but does not expose. Before

sending this post, I tried the lens on another D800 and D3000 and it works perfecly.

Before sending the body to repair, I wanted to check whether anyone heree faced a similar issue and (hopefully) it has a quick and easy

solution that I oversee.

If you can, I would send both the camera body and the lens in to the repair shop. Since the lens works on other cameras, and since the camera works with other lenses, it's not clear which unit is at fault. Plus, the technician may not be able to reproduce the problem with only one of the units. Having both the camera and the lens will ensure that the problem is easily demonstrated, and that will allow the technician to troubleshoot it.

I am sure that firmware is not the issue. I have had the 24-120mm/f4 AF-S VR since 2010 and used that on early versions of the D800 and D800E last year without any problems. I would re-clean the electronic contacts on both the lens and the body around the mount. Hopefully that would fix the problem. If not, I agree that it is a good idea to send both to the repair shop.

I cant say there was a significant amount of dust, or dirt but whatever it is, it worked.

I am glad that it is working now. In most of these cases, the problem is oxidation on the electronic contacts. Once you clean that so that the electronic signal is communicating, the problem is resolved. If something is indeed broken inside, that lens/body should not work with other body/lens.

Good to know cleaning made it worked.
I had a similar issue with my 70-200/2.8. Suddenly AF would stop working. Jiggling the lens a bit made the function come back.
I assume your issue was with the camera. The lens contacts are pointy so if one was oxidized it would probably have made the lens unworkable on any body.
On the other hand the camera contact are rather large and each lens doesn't have its contacts fall in the exact same location as other lenses. So you could have a small patch of dirt or oxidation just where one of the 24-120 contacts landed preventing that lens to work but yet allowing others to work as their responsive contact pin was slightly to the side of the dirty patch.
