railphotog
Very interesting item and photos, hard to believe things were that bad. Wonder what the immigrants' lives were before they came to New York? Better? Worse?

There are several references "the newly invented technique of flashlight photography"; was this actually by flashlight or by early flash?

mark_drutz
Lewis Hines (not sure of spelling) also photographed the terrible conditions people lived and worked in New York. He especially exposed the evils of child labor at the time. The work of both photographers is well worth looking up.

There is a large public housing project in NYC named for Jacob Riis.
