errol young
I am working with a community group on a documentary and portrait project.
I shot this with my P7100 in stead of my D700 or D300. People were a lot more relaxed with this camera.
I turned off the souind and used the display to shoot.
Lighting was not great but the little camera did its best.

bruce_rubenstein
People often overlook that the technical IQ requirements depend on subject and intended use of the image. I imagine that the IQ of what you got is adequate, and yes, small quiet cameras are less obvious and people react differently to them.
aravind1
What lens were you using? I ask this, as people react differently to a 70-200 lens pointing them or a 50mm lens.
eric_arnold
the p7100 has a fixed zoom lens. it's a point and shoot. i've used the p7000 in situations where a bigger camera might be disruptive or intrusive. it's really about getting the shot.
errol young
I usually use the 16-85 on the 7000. It is not large but can be intimidating. I wish the P7100 had a manual zoom but it is pretty good IQ wise. I used to shoot pro weddings with 6mp D70s. the &100 is 10mp.
eric_arnold
the IQ is surprisingly good for a P&S. and the zoom range is right --28-200. where the p7000 lets me down is in shutter lag and hi-ISO noise, but that's to be expected from a small sensor cam. i like using it with an SB-400 for bounce flash, but the camera's flash controls, which are very good, wont work w/ external flash.
Peter_in_PA
For the same reason, the latest offerings from Fuji are looking really great to me. I think going forward I want a camera like that. I love my D90, don't get me wrong, but that XE-1 would be a LOT less intimidating in situations like the one the OP describes. I'm hoping that Nikon figures out that what we REALLY want is DX mirrorless. The tiny sensor of the mirrorless sensor they have now doesn't really interest me.
pge
I have a P7700 for times when a DSLR is not appropriate. To this day I am surprised and impressed with its high iso abilities. It will certainly get the shot. Yes, it is no DSLR, but it is also not the P&S of even a few years ago. Do not disregard it just because it has a tiny sensor until you have looked at some photos.
errol young
The small sensor is an advantage fir DOF. I goods light it can take interesting macro like shots.

c_watson1
I'm impressed with what some of the better Nikon p&s cameras can do. Lowest ISO, manual settings and a tripod can work wonders.
shutterbud
I was in a nightclub in a strange city the other weekend and I 'just happened' to have a GX1 and the tiny tiny pancake 14mm with me. Nobody had a problem with my taking pictures. I don't think there is any way I'd have been allowed to shoot with a larger DSLR and high quality (i.e. large and intimidating) lens
