Taking a chance on a Q

Using the philosophy that the only good photographer is one always has a camera with him, I decided to get a Pentax Q. Got it for cheap dollars. It is so small it fits in my coat pocket. Any other Q'ers out there?

I've been shooting my Q kit nearly exclusively for the last month or so. I can literally fit a multi-lens kit in my jacket pockets. I've enjoyed using it much more than my older (but not that old) Panasonic Lumix LX-5.

It's possible the ur-Q is getting harder to find new, as its replacement the Q10 has already been available for a few months. I think some have bought them up to get the 8.5/1.9 01 prime, which so far has not been available in the US with either a Q10 kit or individually. I assume Pentax will make the 01 available by itself soon, or with a Q10 prime kit.

With the 01+VF, 02, and 06 lenses my Q kit is almost complete. The IQ to weight ratio is fantastic and the Q has quickly become my daily carry-everywhere camera. Following some of the more experienced wildlife shooters on the other Pentax forum, I have just completed my Q-birding-kit, which consists of an LCD VF, a Q2PK adapter, a RedDot finder, and a 200+300mm lens kit. The effective reach of the kit is simply awesome. If you can stand using a VF-free camera, the Q will not disappoint.

While the Q10 has some better functions, I much prefer the cooler look of the Q. The newer Q10 looks too damn serious.

A fitting analogy would be what Toyota did with the Scion xB. The initial 2004 model was fun to look at and a kick to drive. By 2008 let's just say the xB reached middle age awfully quickly. Now it's discontinued.

A lot of camera for $190. I paid more than that for my 02 zoom alone, several months ago when kits only bundled the 01 Prime. Unfortunately the only way to get an 01 in the US right now is with the increasingly hard to find ur-Q kit, which still goes for close to $400. I assume that Pentax will make the 01 available alone relatively soon.

I like that the Q10 can be ordered in custom color combinations now at a similar price to the standard stocked colors, even in the US, though I think they should allow this body-only as well.

Got a like-new Q this week off eBay with the 01 lens and a 3rd party PK adapter. Was surprised at how small it is! But IQ is way better than any P&S I have ever owned. So far I like it, although I have not done much shooting except with the 01. Excited to try a little birding if spring ever gets here.
