Andrew Garrard
A brief moment of excitement there, but no support for trap focus or remapping any of the "left-hand-only" buttons (ISO, WB, AF...) to the right hand. At least, as documented - I've not tried it yet. I'll still be hoping to get my hack on.

Still, at least they've done something about some of the lock-ups and the live view exposure preview behaviour. (I presume not the line skipping, though.)

Andrew Garrard
Supposedly some other cameras have updates too, though for some it's only adding 800mm support. The D600 video output may have been fixed. Doesn't look like the D7100 or D700 have 800mm support, when I just looked. (Obviously this is an outrage and will stop me from buying the 800mm I always wanted... though it's weird, because the D700 supports the TS-E lenses.)
lwg
The fix for the Manual exposure issue in Liveview is most welcome. One tip I just found from Thom Hogan (http://bythom.com/index.htm) is to press the OK button, which toggles between showing the actual exposure, and showing one that's normalized for display. This is very nice for focusing wide open, but shooting stopped down. Now you don't need to adjust the shutter speed just to see the image for focusing.
ilkka_nissila
The D700 is compatible with the AF-S VR 800mm f/5.6 without firmware upgrade, so that's why it didn't get any. The following are listed as compatible "*D3, *D3S, *D3X, *D4, D300, D300S, *D600, D700, *D800, *D800E, D3100, D3200, D5000, D5100, D5200, *D7000." Those with asterisk require FW upgrade. The D7100 is newer than the 800mm so support for the 800mm is probably taken into account in the original firmware.
ilkka_nissila
Now the live view is automatic exposure by default, even with the camera in manual exposure mode. You can toggle exposure simulation on and off by pressing OK in live view mode.
francisco_disilvestro

This is very nice for focusing wide open, but shooting stopped down

The lens remains stopped down at all times, it is only an adjustment in brigthness or "gain" so you are able to see the image for focusing. This allows to achieve critical focusing with lenses that have focus shift at different apertures.

The "exposure preview" mode is not useful when using flash or strobes as the main source of light and many studio photographers were complaining about it.
jeff_martindale1
Beginner question:
If I install the new firmware version, does this affect any of the custom settings I've made to the camera? That is, does installing the new firmware reset everything to the factory default settings?
Thanks,
mark_stephan2
Thanks for letting me know about the update. I'm a new D800 user, will I see a difference in camera performance?
