US Black Friday Deal: D7000 + 18-105mm DX for $1000

This is apparently a very short-term promotion from Nikon USA: you can get a D7000 with the 18-105mm DX AF-S VR kit lens for just below $1000. It seems to be good for Black Friday and Saturday only. So if you want to take advantage of it, please act fast. I have no idea whether this deal will remain after that:

B&H: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/735300-REG/Nikon_25474_D7000_DSLR_Camera_Kit.html

Nikon USA seems to be eager to move the D7000. You can draw your own conclusions.

I was at Keeble and Shuchat in Palo Alto, California on Black Friday, and they had that deal available. Since the D7000 is usually around $999 or so in these days, this deal essentially gives you a free 18-105mm DX lens, which you can always re-sell should you only want the body.

In any case, it looks like the deal is over and the kit is back to $1200.

Price on the D7000 body only has dropped to $896. I agree, they do seem to want to move the D7000. On the other hand, the price of Nikon's other "high end" dx body- the D300s, has not changed. It still hovers around $1700. I wonder if there are plans to replace the d300s or if the d7000 type cameras will be the top of the dx line?

As I said on another thread, I have absolutely no doubt that Nikon will update the D300S to a newer model. Otherwise, Nikon's DX line will have no high-end DX DSLR to compete against Canon (e.g. the 7D), Sony and even Pentax. Nikon simply cannot afford to do that.

The D300S was discontinued a year ago, as Nikon can no longer sell any EN-EL3e based product in Japan. The D300S has a sensor based on the 2007 D300 and the entire camera is merely a small update from the D300. Nobody in the right mind is going to spend $1700 on a new D300S with its 5-year-old technology. The current $1700 price is meaningless since there is effectly no market for it any more. That price cannot compete at all against used D300/D300S on eBay, Craig's List, etc.

I would expect something to replace the D7000 and D300S in early 2013, but as I wrote, I am puzzled by Nikon putting the D600 and D7000's AF module on the D5200. If Nikon updates the D7000, it has to be much better than the D5200 and the D300S' successor will have to be a lot better yet. So I wonder whether the D7000 and D300S will be merged into just one new model.

Only time will tell.

I bought the kit @ $1000 (we will see when I get it). If Nikon does update the D300s, I think we will see the "pro-body" with the 5200's 24MP sensor... and a price around $1500. If they update the D7000, I think we will see the 5200's 24MP sensor (!) and the locking top button (aka D600 style) and maybe around $1300... all pure speculation. Either way, I can't see where it's going to be that ground breaking of an update (I don't need 24MP). And I couldn't pass up a D7000 at $800 after I sell the lens! BTW, anyone want to buy a never used 18-105 lens?!

Nikon USA priced the D7000 + 18-105 DX kits at below $999 in order to sell a lot of them. I am sure that the demand was very high at that price and it may take them a week or two to deliver, but I would imagine that they will honor that price. Otherwise, back to $1200, the demand will once again be low as the D7000 is over two years old and must be close to the end of its production cycle. People will simply cancel or return their order if they don't honor the $999 or $996 or whatever price tag.

Nikon.ca is obviously OK with Canadian dealers selling D7000 bodies for just south of C$800 and MB D-11 grips for C$200 or less. That's been the case in major Canadian cities for the last 2 weeks. Though a replacement is likely coming, Thom Hogan's take on Nikon's financials suggests a large post-Thai flood inventory of D7000s might account for the discounts that will probably continue on-again/off-again into 2013.

I received an e-mail from the Nikon Store on Wednesday, announcing the "Black Friday Doorbusters" sale on the D7000 for $500.00 off. After checking several on-line sellers, I found that B&H Photo was offering the same deal, along with a free camera bag (Lowepro Rezo 170 AW) and a Sandisk 16GB Class 10 memory card.
After mulling it over, I decided to place an order with B&H on Friday (Nov. 23). At the time I placed my order their website indicated that the item was "In Stock". By Monday, I found that it was "backordered". I'm not especially concerned that I may have to wait, I still have my Nikon D90.
I'm sure that the substantial discounts being offered for the D7000 are indicative that it will probably be replaced in the coming year. The next model will, certainly, have an attractive feature set with some additional features that aren't currently on the D7000. It will also be priced at least has much as the D7000 when it was introduced, if not more.
Frankly I'm not concerned about missing some newer features. The D7000 offers me a nice upgrade from my D90, which has been a very good camera. I especially will enjoy having autofocus available in video mode, and the ability to use my older AI-S lens in either A or M modes with matrix metering.

I could have purchased a Nikon D7000 body only, or a D7000 with the 18-105mm kit lens for the same price from B&H Photo ($996.95). I can't imagine why I wouldn't include the lens (which I did). If I'm really unhappy with the lens, which I don't expect to be, I can sell it. What's not to like?
