ulf_agerup
I have just upgraded from Ligtroom 3.6 to 4.2. When I open my LR3 catalogue in LR4 and convert it I can see all the data. That is, I can see that i have X numbers of photos, collections, etc. However, when I open the grid view the photos are shown as grey squares. They retain the file names and metadata, but the image is not visible. What is more, my folders are not visible any more.

Has anyone encountered this, and if so, how do I solve the issue. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Ulf

mark_sirota1
The grey squares are either because your previews are unavailable or corrupt, or because of a monitor profile problem. Can you see them in Develop? Does rendering new previews help? To test a monitor profile issue, set your monitor profile to sRGB -- if this works, this is not a solution -- it means you need a new proper monitor profile.

Can you be more specific about "my folders are not visible any more"? You mean the Folders panel is missing, or the panel is there but there are no folders, or the folders are listed but there are question marks?

ulf_agerup
Mark,
The folders that I had before migration to LR4 are completely gone. The panels that indicate sources are still there. All the collections that I had are still there (the names and indication of number of files). However, when I click them I just get grey squares where the photos should be -both in grid view and develop mode. In Develop mode it says that the file i clicked is offline or missing. I have not moved or deleted the image files but LR doesn't seem to be able to find them. I can locate my photos in the finder and they seem to be OK. It's just that I can't get LR to work properly.
I realize I neglected to mention that I switched from PC to Mac when I upgraded to LR4. I do not know if that introduces problems. I assumed it would work the same.
Lauren, my grey squares don't have question marks, so it seems fine in that regard.

Regards,

Ulf
mark_sirota1
Wait, that doesn't make any sense. If Develop says the file is offline or missing, then there should be question marks in grid. Those two things mean exactly the same thing. So please confirm that -- if there really are no question marks, then something is seriously broken.

I think what happened is that when you switched from PC to Mac, the file paths to your photo files look different. If I'm right, all you need to do is right-click on the top-level folder in the Folders panel. Choose "Find Missing Folder" if it's there in the context menu (I think it will be), or "Update Folder Location" if not. Navigate to the folder you right-clicked on, and I think it should all resolve itself. Repeat if you have multiple top-level folders in the Folders panel.
ulf_agerup
You're right, there are question marks -I just didn't notice them.

The problem with your suggestion is that I have no folders to click. In the left panel I have the catalogue where I can see the number of photos I have total, previous import, and missing photos (which is almost the same number as total number of photos). Under folders I just have the two folders I have created since I upgraded. Then under Collections I have all the old collections indicated.

Any ideas for a fix?
mark_sirota1
It's not that I don't believe you, but in order to suggest something I think I need to see a screen shot of your Folders panel. Could you please post one?
ulf_agerup
Sure, I'll attach one. See what you make of it.
mark_sirota1
Okay, so you used to have your photos on three external drives, which your Windows system knew as C:, F:, and N:.

What you need to do is open up those missing drives (just click the drive header), and under that you'll see your missing folders. Right-click the top level missing folder(s) under each drive as described earlier, choose "Find Missing Folder", navigate to the new location, and you'll be good to go.
ulf_agerup
It seems to be working. Thank you so much!

Ulf
mark_sirota1
Excellent, glad to help! Once you've pointed LR at the new locations, you might want to select them all and render new previews (in the Library/Previews menu). I'd suggest waiting until you're ready for bed, and let it run overnight.
