tony_estcourt
Does anyone know what all this banding/noise is?....un-modified Nikon D700, 24mm lens, cheap IR720 filter. Exposure was ISO200, 30s, F22. No noise reduction was used and this picture below has simply has white balance corrected.

http://www.tonyestcourt.org.uk/html/test_shot.html

Thanks, Tony
frank_skomial
30 seconds was a long exposure.
The camera has special menu to activate noise reduction for long exposures. Why not to take advantage of what is offered to you.
tony_estcourt
I think this might be "amp glow". From what I've read so far I need to (1) use long exposure NR to take a duplicate dark frame image and subtract the noise (2) make sure I dont use live view (3) use the viewfinder blind.
jonsjons
Hi Tony, well it definitely looks like a hotspot in the center of the frame. It's produced by internal reflections within the lens, though the cheap filter may be adding to the problem. If it's just the lens, you might try stopping down less to make the spot more diffuse and correcting the spot in post.
I've seen plenty of hotspots with various lenses in my infrared work, but I've never seen horizontal streaking like that. Definitely try the viewfinder blind. If that doesn't work, maybe a better filter will produce less of these reflections.
