donaldamacmillan
Hi folks

I bought my 40D brand-new about 4 years ago. I've never updated it's firmware, i imagine that there have been numerous firmware upgrades that have been released over the years, but i've just never gotten around to doing this (also been a bit daunted by the process, admittedly).

Should i get to grips with this and upgrade my 40D's firmware? If yes, should i install each individual upgrade? Or am i okay to just download the most recent, and should my 40D operate perfectly fine upon doing so? I live in the UK and i've since checked that the Canon UK site nolonger offers firmware upgrades for the 40D but Canon USA does, am i ok to download any upgrades from the USA site for my camera?

Many thanks for any advice given.

Kindest regards,
Donaldo
keith reeder
Hi Donald(o),

to be honest, the 40D's firmware updates never really changed things significantly- bug fixes and tweaks for the most part - so if yours is working as you want, there's no pressing need to upgrade: but if you do, you can go straight to the latest firmware - it includes all the intermediate changes.

As long as you follow the instructions properly, firmware upgrading is essentially risk-free. And yes, the US firmware is fine for us Brits.
Marcus Ian
I would recommend doing it sooner or later, especially if you plan to continue shooting w/ the 40D. In the past we've had numerous problems with new computers and OS updates creating incompatibility with legacy hardware (as well as software of course), so while there is no compelling reason to do a firmware update now (at least for the 40D), in the future, you may find that a 'current' FW resolves a compatibility issue. Since I'd not expect Canon to make any further revisions at this point, the current FW is likely to be the last word, and give you the greatest usage life.

JDMvW
There are good reasons, usually even to the benefit of the user, to upgrade firmware. Normally the latest update may be all you need, but in a few cases, you may have to first update to an early update version first.

Just follow the instructions carefully. Make sure that the camera battery is fully charged, etc.
It's really not difficult at all.

For the 40D go to Canon's page at http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/support/professional/professional_cameras/eos_digital_slr_cameras/eos_40d#DriversAndSoftware , choose your computer operating system, choose "firmware", and do exactly what they tell you to download and install.
wade_keenon1
It will be easier than you think. There is only one firmware update for the 40D.
On the other hand, there have been numerous software updates (DPP, etc.).
keith reeder
Wade, there has been a lot more than one firmware update for the 40D - my body (I was an early adopter) came with v.1.0.3 and ended up with 1.1.1, via 1.0.5, 1.0.8, 1.1.0 and finally 1.1.1.

All of these are still out there to download if you look for them.
