SEO optimization Multiple Domains? or Subdomains?

This seems to be the never ending question.... What is best for SEO?
I already know that I need at least two sites. One for my weddings, and one for events/lifestyle work. The plan WAS to have a landing page with options/links to two subdomains that would serve as the two separate websites.
I was suddenly told that for SEO optimization it's best to completely separate the sites into two separate domains because too many key words will lower my stats with google.
what do I do?! any advise would be greatly appreciated thank you!

If you want each site to carry its own weight and appeal to its own audience, it will indeed be cleanest (and SEO-friendliest) if you simply part each site on its own domain. If you get even one single job as a result of the better search engine placement and the more focused-message web site addresses for each area of business ... the the extra $15 a year or so to register another domain, and the low cost of hosting it, will be very worth it.

Thank you for your response Matt!
1. What do you suggest then comes up when people search my name by chance? For now I have www.mayamyers.com (the old side is already down now it's just a landing page). The new sites will have to be different names all together like www.mayamyersweddings.com and lifestyle.com.
2 Do I get rid of the main www.mayamyers.com site all together? If I do that do I have to build my rankings all over again? I get first page placement with LA event photog searches with that one so I don't want to lose that...

I appreciate your response and advise!

Don't get rid of the main site. Use it as another way to greet people and steer traffic to the line-of-business sites. People simply searching your name will find what they're looking for - but they're going to be pretty unsual (out of the blue searches on only your name) compared to searches that have some more content-specific context.
