So much do I love and admire the 105/2.5 that I'd like to clarify what Scott was saying, so you are not accidentally misled. In 1971, several years before the introduction of the Ai lenses, the 105 formula switched from a classic sonnar design (dating back to the rangefinder lens that made Nikon famous in the early-mid-1950s) which had 5 elements in 3 groups, to a gaussian design of five elements in four groups. The latter is considered superior. Any Ai or Ais 105 has this design. Any pre-Ai lens with a serial number over 400,000 has this design as well. All the sonnar F lenses are serials between 120,000 and about 290,000. The sonnar has its advocates. TONS of sample photos from both camps can be found on this here interweb. I'd go with the Ai-S myself, with the built in hood and shorter focus throw.

<< just purchased a Nikon F100 for $200. >>
Think I'd better put my film cameras on eBay before they become totally worthless. ;)

Think the 28-85 or 35-70 would do well with it, unless you want to spend much more to get the 28-70 or 24-70.

thanks for everyones' thoughts, I'll have my hands on my F100 when I get back to canada - still in China for 4 weeks -currently shooting china on a canon T90, EOS 620, and of course the Olympus IS 5 and canon 5D mark II
part of my reason for posting here is to ask for thoughts on what pairs up nice with my ebay $200 F100, and as well, I wanted to get to know whos who in the Nikon forms...as I'm new to Nikon...and will no doubt have questions
Thanks all - I bought a nikon zoom at a thrift store for $10 a few months ago in canada...I'll get back and see if it fits the F100...I seem to recall it was a zoom...made by ???? ha ha...fill you all in later...I'll keep watching ebay while i'm away with all your suggestions in mind...lall good!

Many of the older primes are good if you don't mind manual focus. I personally love the 50 F2 ai. The older 75-150 e zoom is another gem. For inexpensive AF the 28-70 3.5-4.5 is a fine performing lens and can be had for less than $100. It's small, smooth and sharp. Defiantly a sleeper.
