joshroot
I'm pretty stoked to announce that, with just a few exceptions, Photo.net subscribers will not see ads on the site any more

What are the exceptions:

-The homepage
-The Photo.net "partner store"
-The Pricegrabber camera product suggestions (if you aren't sure what these are, look directly to the right of this post).
-Specific contest or event promotion. For example, we might have a contest that is sponsored by Canon.

You can become a subscriber by going here:

http://www.photo.net/register/subscribe
Any questions, please ask.
Matt Laur
Wow! Congrats on whatever you're doing to make the math work out so that's possible. Great work, Josh.
joshroot
I won't lie, a big part of the math is hoping that those who value the site will decide to subscribe (or renew).

As a bonus, if you've been having trouble with pageloads due to adservers, you should see a significant improvement by becoming a subscriber.

Remember, it's under 7 cents a day to subscribe. That's a pretty good deal.
alfbailey
I didn't have anything against the advertisers themeselves, but if this means improved browsing performance on the site, then its got to be a good move. Nothng is more frustrating than typing a critique of "war and peace" proportions, only to lose it when the site crashes. I'm not entirely sure if that particular kind of failure can be attributed to advertisers, but I'm definately for anything that could help in that respect, and from a personal point of view, I would rather pay a bit more as a subscription (although I know you are not proposing that here) for quality than have a heavily advert subsidised site that is slow and sometimes unresponsive. Cheers Josh!

philrichardson
I would agree the cost of membership is nominal and a true bargin for those that use it regularly. I have not had any big problems with advertisers myself that I am aware of, but there are times when the site seems slow to load, so if this improves that situation, great! I am pleased with the constant evolution of the site to try to make improvements for the well being of the photographer's experience. Thanks to those in power for their attention to our needs.

David_Cavan
If the business model works, then its a great transition, Josh. I think its a good move to get people thinking about buying into membership. As we've discussed before on this site, the annual price of photo.net is a very good deal, considering the return we get as subscribers.
Dave Cavan https://davecavanphotographics.com/
Wayne Melia
Congratulations on your attempt and efforts. I do hope it works out well.
Having written that
i) I have my suspicions, that the incentive will translate as hoped
ii) I don't find the ads that bad; the layout is such that I can look around them, and being ever concious of the "free lunch" principle, remain slightly wary of what price there will be. As a reasonably long-time subscriber, I have also found photonet to be worth the sum of the subscription price + the ad price.
Nevertheless , thanks again for your continued efforts.

Hector Javkin
That's wonderful. I'm a supporter anyway, but I'll be logging in at times when I might have just read, just to avoid the ads. Thank you.
michaellinder
Josh: Although I never really had any issues with the advertising on the site, this new direction will help to augment the site's overall mission and also its integrity. Good call !

unangelino
Josh
This is a step in the right direction.
You have my pledge that I'll re-subscribe if I learn of, or you develop, a way to make posts from specific members invisible. You know, an "ignore member" list...
This is a popular feature on a few of the other forums I visit and I would find it most welcome here at pnet.
Am I missing something?
Cheers.
Paul
AJHingel
Great step to take, Josh. By the way you could have mentioned that the Inbox page of Pn messages is an exception to the rule too, as far as I can see!
