john_campanelli1
Does anyone know what the value of this lens will be in this economy and digital age? I have a chance to buy one along with a Mamiya 645 pro for $1500. Any insight would be appreciated.
gregory_king1
I've seen them go between $800 and $3000 recently. I sold mine for $2000 last year and probably sold it cheap. If it's in good shape, you should have no issues making your money back.
marc_batters
Completed listings from an advanced search on the auction site shows two (2)
of these APO lenses as 'unsold' for a $1,600 and $3,229 asking price.
I think the advanced search only goes back 90 days. Might not be of much help!
donbright
What is the digital age? Does digital age figure into the value of a used lens?
vince-p
digital age meaning ever fewer people shooting film, i assume. in such an age the values of everything film related should be gradually going down but the last two years have demonstrated otherwise. i have seen values change in cycles of six months in used film equipment: from x to 2x back to x again over the course of 18 months, say. in this digital age of comunications, it only takes a few people taking about how great something is, and posting a few pictures, to start moving the price up and up and up. As those commentaries drop down in the search engine findings, the values start to come down again. or so it seems to me. so it's hard to predict. it's a fast medium tele with APO glass so it should hold its value, and you're getting it a bit below its value.
vince-p
ps by my lights, you should buy it, and if you think you're going to sell it, write here and elsewhere about how great it is, post some excellent shots, get a couple of conversations going and then put it out there.....
ondebanks
If the glass is perfect, then $1500 is a very keen price, especially with a 645 Pro camera thrown in.

It should come with a set of rear filters, and ideally the metal carrying case it was originally sold with.

"The digital age" has not decreased interest in the manual focus Mamiya APO lenses, at all. On the contrary, they are still used by digital-back shooters on the Mamiya/PhaseOne camera because they are faster than the AF alternatives, and their quality is of the very highest level. For example, see Brian Hirschfield's tests of the 300/2.8 with an 80 Mpix back. I don't have the 300/2.8 (would love to get one) but I do have the 200/2.8 and it's the best optic I've ever used.
john_campanelli1
I emailed him and he says it does have the filters and case. He also said he paid 9K in 1995. If I decide to buy it what would be a price I could ask for and make some money and at the same time someone would get a good deal.
