Changing the default save location in CaptureNX2

Recommended Posts

In Capture NX2, does anyone know if its possible to change the default save location to the folder the file came from?

At the moment when I click "Save as" it defaults to the last place I saved a file meaning a several click navigation back through my folder structure to find the right folder. Very frustrating; and I have "lost" a few files.

Thanks

If you simply choose "save" (instead of "save as") it will automatically write the file you opened, in the place from which you opened it. If you're working with NEF files, that's never a worry because your edits are always non-destructive. If you're editing JPGs, hopefully you're always working on a folder full of files for which you always have at least one complete copy on another drive or two.

Almost all programs treat "save as" as an action that points towards the last place you did a "save as" to. The reason for this is that for some projects, you may be opening files from any number of folders, while always saving your output to one different folder (I work this way all the time, actually).

Thanks Matt.
I usually download all shots from the camera into a numbered folder under the year (this is my archive). Then using ViewNX I delete the complete disasters and apply a rating to any I want to show or edit. I copy the rated photos to a second folder. I have one folder (+ sub-folders as reqd) for each month.
When I come to edit, I'll open the NEF; edit it; then click "save". In most cases I like to create a high quality jpeg copy (for ease of transfering to flickr/Facebook etc) and save it in the same folder. Unfortunately this is when I encounter the issue with Capture NX2.
Most frustrating. I don't really want to change my workflow.

I guess my point, Chris, is that this is by design. It's that way for the same reason that MS Word or many other big mainstream pieces of software work exactly the same way. I guess I'm exactly in the opposite camp ... I like that when I happen to do a Save As, that it defaults to where I last did it. You only have to change it once, obviously - and if you could change the default location, you'd have to change that every time you switched projects anyway... so, it's a wash, really.

I agree with the OP. There's no reason for NX2 not to have a choice in preferences for choosing your default save location. Lots of software does this. It's a simple toggle. Not everyone works the same way. For me it is frustrating too.

This is an older post but still an issue if anyone as an idea. It is NOT a wash if your preference is to usually save a derivative file to the source folder. I am in this same camp as the OP. LR gives this as an option and offers the ability to create "save as" templates. At the least, CNX2 needs to offer a default "save as" location to be the source folder. This way you have a JPEG right next to the raw nef. There are various reasons this is an advantage. The editing options from CNX2 are strong. The work flow and browser capability of CNX2 are, unfortunately, very "under-engineered".
