rick_gerbehy1
Avoid Carlo's....long lines for maybe a peek at someone who may have been on TV. Bakery stuff from there is OK, but pricey like anything else you buy in Hoboken lately.

Spearhead
http://katzsdelicatessen.com/

The great thing is that it's New York food and it's difficult, if not impossible, find high quality traditional deli food like this outside NYC, certainly not in Montreal. Great place, easy with kids.
Music and Portraits Blog: Life in Portugal

Spearhead
Last time I was there, I ate a lot of French food and wild game. It will be interesting to try the deli food.
Music and Portraits Blog: Life in Portugal
Rick Waller
Best piece of advice that I can give you is to stay out of Times Square area. Your meals will be generally mediocre and very overpriced.

When I entertain out of towners and want to show them an interesting place to chow down (especially with kids), I take them to Dinosaur Barbeque. It is under the west side highway at around 126th street and is a giant road house type joint with exceptional bbq at very reasonable prices.

Google it.
Monophoto
Take the subway down to Chelsea and go to Chelsea Market. It's a neat place with a lot of very family-friendly restaurants.
jim_interlicchio1
There's Dallas BBQ restaurants - a few locations in the city, my favorite location is on 72nd and 3rd Ave. There are quite a few locations in Manhattan. Pretty good food, very kid friendly.
http://dallasbbq.com/
In Times Square there's Virgil's. http://www.yelp.com/biz/virgils-real-barbecue-new-york
Enjoy!
margatt
Try Ellen's Stardust Diner (1650 Broadway at 51st). Not gourmet, not elegant, but lots of fun... especially for a child. Decor is a retro 1950's diner, lots of chrome and memorabilia about. The best part of all is the waitstaff, all are aspiring Broadway singers, who take turns sings and dancing to the latest/famous Broadway tunes. You'd never know how well your waiter sings!
