Hi All,
I am new to Film and OM system, I got T32 flash and Om4. The problem i am facing is when flash is attached and set to Automatic my shutter speed remain same as it was without flash. Is there anything wrong because as i read OM4 should make it to 1/60th of second in case shutter speed is slower.

Many Thakns,

I don't think the viewfinder shutter speed locks into 1/60, at least not on my OM-4T, because with the F280 flash the shutter speed is always synced. It would still fire at 1/60 with the T32. The only viewfinder indication is the flash ready light, that tells you the flash is ready to go at 1/60, in automatic mode. In manual mode the flash ready light just means the flash is charged.

Try this - put the camera in auto and the aperture to f16 in a dark room. Listen to the shutter - if it stays open a long time (the value indicated in the viewfinder), the flash sync isn't working properly. Otherwise, if it opens and shuts quickly, it's operating at 1/60th and working correctly.

Do the photos come out?

Basically, you've got several auto-exposure systems competing. The OM4 has the auto-exposure system you are probably aware of that meters directly off of the film-plane during the exposure. But you may not be aware of the T30's own on-board auto-exposure system which will limit the flash duration based on the available light. It actually works so well that I use it on fully manual cameras quite often. And when tethered to an OM4 or OM2SP, it should also be able to "talk" to the camera to get really accurate exposure control from the meter. So you have a few options:

- Set the Flash to one of the manual settings and allow the camera to do the exposure control.
- Set the Flash to auto and the camera to manual.

Since the OTF exposure control is far more accurate than the Flash's thyristor control, I would go with the former.

I have the smaller T-20 flashes and never paid much attention to using them. I always thought, in full auto mode on an OM-4, that I didn't have to do anything more than aim, focus and shoot.

Then I read that to work properly, you have to select an aperture that results in a shutter speed of 1/60 or less in ambient light. Otherwise the sensors can't shut the light off fast enough. The camera is supposed to automatically select 1/60fh of a second with a T series flash on and if it doesn't something is wrong.

I put my T32 on my OM-4T last night. Set to "Automatic with OM-2", using ASA 100 film inside, automatic mode set on the camera. The flash ready light came on, as expected, but the shutter speed indicated 1/2 second. I took 4 different shots and none of them sounded like 1/2 second, they all sounded like 1/60th or maybe 1/30th. I'll develop the film tonite or tomorrow but as the auto check indicator blinked, I'm pretty sure everything worked as intended.
